Kate Garraway, 54, has shared a heart-warming photograph of herself, her husband Derek and their son Billy in their garden. In the caption, Kate candidly explained that gardening had helped the family when “life felt on the edge”.

Kate added that her new hobby was motivated by her appearance on tonight’s special episode of Alan Titchmarsh’s Love Your Garden.

In the photo, Kate can be seen kneeling beside Derek’s wheelchair as Billy hands his father something he has picked from the garden.

The presenter told her one million followers: “At last, I can share with you a wonderful personal challenge on ITV at 8pm tonight – can you #GrowYourselfWell?!

“It started out as a kind of therapy – gardening and nature helped distract me when life felt on the edge.

“And then, thanks to the team at Love Your Garden, I took it a step further and turned our garden into a beautiful factory for physical healing too.

“They even helped me carry Derek outside so he could see the fruits of our labour too.

“A very emotional moment.

“I really hope you feel inspired and comforted by the programme – do let me know!”

Hundreds of Kate’s friends and followers took to the comments to share their support over the emotional post.

Co-host Susanna Reid penned: “This is so amazing. You all are.”

Sandra said: “Emotional just seeing your family pic.”

While Sue wrote: “Just such a beautiful moment for you all… and precious, precious memories.”

And Jo echoed: “You truly are an inspiration.”

As Derek continues to battle with his health, Kate decided to grow her own medicinal plants and herbs.

She has created three different beds of medicinal, tea and aromatherapy plants.

In the programme, the presenter explains: “We want to make the garden into something more than just space to be. I really want to grow some plants that will actually improve our health and wellbeing.

“If you look past the initial beauty of the plants, it can give you so much more.

“I haven’t quite proved you can grow yourself well but I think I’ve definitely learnt you can grow yourself happier.”

The episode will also see Kate learn about the medicinal benefits of plants in Kew Gardens and battle terrible weather and failing crops in her attempt to turn her space into a health and well-being garden.

Love Your Garden: Grow Your Own Special airs tonight at 8pm on ITV.
