HBO Shares Trailer For Jason Isbell Documentary 'Running With Our Eyes Closed'

HBO recently released a trailer for the Jason Isbell documentary Running With Our Eyes Closed.

The Sam Jones-directed documentary, which is named after the critically acclaimed “Running With Our Eyes Closed” track from the Reunions project, chronicles Isbell recording the album with The 400 Unit.

The documentary, set to premiere on HBO and streamer HBO Max on April 7, also shows Isbell figuring out how to navigate demons the pandemic lockdown conjures up.

The film also examines Isbell’s childhood in rural Alabama and his years with the Drive-By Truckers and also provides a close look at the musician’s relationship with his wife Amanda Shires.

“When I have a hard day I can’t just go home and have a drink. There’s no escape for me,” says Isbell, who has been sober for a decade, in this first look at the film.

“I know how he gets when he makes records, whether or not he sees it at the time or not,” Shires says. Meanwhile, Isbell adds, “Most people don’t go to work with their wife.”

In addition to Isbell and Shires, the film features interviews with musicians Chad Gamble, Sadler Vaden, Jimbo Hart, Derry DeBorja and Patterson Hood, producer Dave Cobb and manager Traci Thomas.
