James Martin is best known for his culinary skills and tasty recipes which are featured in his self-titled ITV show Saturday Morning. Proving he’s just as affable off-screen as he appears on, the TV chef previously opened up about an alarming incident he witnessed where he came to a stranger’s rescue.

The 49-year-old explained that the mugging took place in his younger years, and saw him hold the suspects down.

The details come after the ITV chef was quizzed on the last time he threw a punch at someone.

James revealed the incident took place over two decades ago while walking through London’s Oxford Street.

The small-screen star added that he acted in self-defence after one of the muggers had hit him first.

“I was 24-year-old and walking on Oxford Street,” James told GQ magazine in 2019.

“Two people mugged this lady at a cash point.”

He continued: “I was stood behind this lady, they hit me first and I hit them back and then I sat on one and grabbed hold of the other by the neck in a headlock.

“The police were just around the corner so they came and arrested both of them.”

Meanwhile, James recently had cause to celebrate after the chef was awarded a coveted prize earlier this week.

Taking to Twitter, the ITV favourite shared his “surprise” after he scooped two awards.

In view of his 711,000 followers, James retweeted a message from Great British Food.

The post read: “A big congratulations to @jamesmartinchef, who scooped up two Reader Voted Great British Food Awards this year! Very well-deserved!”
