Kevin Clifton: ‘Why are you annoyed?’ Stacey Dooley quizzes ‘gutted’ Strictly boyfriend

Stacey Dooley, 32, and Kevin Clifton, 37, performed a sizing Salsa in Blackpool’s Ballroom Tower during the iconic weekend last year on Strictly Come Dancing. Reflecting on this time in 2018, Kevin spoke on BBC podcast Don’t Tell Me The Score about how their dance went.

The Grimsby-born star explained he put a lot of pressure on their performance as he believed they were going to receive high scores from the judges.

Kevin admitted he let it “slip” during Blackpool as he said it becomes very “competitive” and he was focusing on the wrong aspect.

He said: “Me and Stacey were doing quite well, she was improving around Blackpool and I wanted to do a great number and bit of me was thinking can we win this?”

“I probably let that get into my head a little bit,” Kevin acknowledged.

Speaking about the routine they had planned, he said: “I thought this is going to be great, we’re going to blow everyone away at Blackpool, and everyone’s going to stand up and cheer and clap.

“So I was slightly less focused on the work in the same way that I had been, and I thought we had a great dance so I was like focus on the result, this is going to go down great maybe 10s it went well.”

The judges at the time, Craig Revel Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Bruno Tonioli and Darcey Bussell who went on to quit, didn’t score the pair high.

“The dance itself did go really well but the judges weren’t as favourable to us as some of the other couples,” Kevin recalled. “We finished bottom half of leaderboard.”

Kevin admitted he was “gutted” they didn’t get 10s all round and ended up getting emotional, with Stacey asking why he’s “annoyed”.

“I was gutted,” he said. “Stacey was like ‘why are you so emotional tonight, what’s wrong? I thought it went really well’.”

He went on: “I was like it did, it was amazing and she was like ‘so why are you annoyed?’ because I thought we were going to get nines and 10s but we got sevens.

“But I was really gutted, we smashed it, it was a great dance.”

Kevin said after Blackpool, he changed his mindset and stopped focusing on the prospect of winning, which seemed to work really well as they came away with 10s the following week.

Meanwhile, Kevin released a new podcast of his own this week on his self-titled The Kevin Clifton Show.

Speaking about the process of creating a dance for Strictly, the star went on to reveal what he would remove from the programme.

Kevin got onto the subject as he discussed dancing a Cha Cha Cha with EastEnders’ Maisie Smith for the Children in Need special, which they won.

He said: “For those of you that watched the show, there was one big group number that we do.

“We all had a chance within that group number to do our bit and there was a bit of Cha Cha Cha. Which usually I hate.”

Kevin added: “I hate Cha Cha Cha the most on Strictly. If I was in charge of Strictly I’d get rid of Cha Cha Cha.”

Strictly Come Dancing airs tomorrow on BBC One at 7pm.
