Kumail Nanjiani Just Ate Pizza and Cake for the First Time Since Getting Shredded
Kumail Nanjiani sent the internet into meltdown when he posted a photo of the ripped physique he had spent a whole year working on while shooting Marvel’s Eternals. Nanjiani has been incredibly forthright about the time, dedication and resources that a superhero transformation requires, and during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live he reiterated that once you have the results you want, it takes yet more work to keep them.
“I’ve been terrified for a year that I’m going to sneeze and lose it, like it’s some great dream I’ve had,” he said. “Once you get there, you don’t stop exercising. I wish it was like a video game where you can just hit Save and then be like, alright, now I look like this.”

I never thought I’d be one of those people who would post a thirsty shirtless, but I’ve worked way too hard for way too long so here we are. You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. I found out a year ago I was going to be in Marvel’s Eternals and decided I wanted to transform how I looked. I would not have been able to do this if I didn’t have a full year with the best trainers and nutritionists paid for by the biggest studio in the world. I’m glad I look like this, but I also understand why I never did before. It would have been impossible without these resources and time. So big thanks to @grantrobertsfit who started working with me at the beginning of the year and made me understand true physical pain for months and months. Then, once we started shooting, a massive thanks to @davidhigginslondon and his team (@ellispartridge, @thebeardypt, @tomcheesemanfitness) for training me almost every day and making me strong, limber and injury free. I can almost touch my toes now. (And thank you for forcing me to do cheat meals David.) Matthews Street Catering for their delicious and healthy meals. And finally, the biggest thanks goes to @emilyvgordon for putting up with me complaining and talking about only working out and dieting for the last year. I promise I’ll be interesting again some day. #thirstyshirtless (Photo by @markupson.) (edit: I left off one very important person: @lancecallahan who trained me for 6 years and helped me build the foundation I could use to do this. Thank you!)
And it’s not just about working out; Nanjiani’s gains were fueled by a strict diet.
“You work out every day, you sort of learn to enjoy it. But the diet is the hardest thing,” he told Kimmel. “I have not had pizza or a donut in over a year. I’ve had no refined sugar in a year, I’ve had almost no carbs at all.”
It was at this point that Kimmel brought out a surprise for his guest; a pizza, and a whole patisserie’s worth of cakes and pastries, which he was invited to gorge on throughout the rest of his interview.
“Oh my god,” Nanjiani said, visibily excited by his first cheat day on over a year. “I’m shaking. Hey! Pizza’s really good!”
Earlier in the show, he reflected on the decision to share his now-infamous Instagram post, and how its impact ended up reverberating all around the world.
“It was the week before Christmas, I was like I don’t know if I’m ever going to look like this again, who knows what I’m going to look like after Christmas, so I was like, I want to take a picture just so I have it,” he said. “And then as soon as I saw the picture, I was like, the world must see it.”
“It exploded,” he continued. “I freaked out, I called my brother. My brother said: ‘Dad has already sent your naked pics to both family WhatsApp groups’… It got into newspapers in Pakistan. I had all my aunts texting me pictures of myself, saying ‘so proud of you’.”
