F1 star Lewis Hamilton, 36, has divided opinion over his bold Met Gala 2021 outfit. The stylish sportsman looked dapper as he stepped out on the iconic steps of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York wearing a classic black suit with a twist.
Lewis paired his sleek black blazer and trousers with a see-through mesh shirt and a white netted veil skirt.
The delicately designed skirt was draped over one of the British racing driver’s trouser legs.
He completed the look with a pair of chic black loafers, alongside small crucifix earrings, a diamond chain and two diamond bracelets.
Although many social media users praised Lewis for his daring ensemble, he was mocked by others.
Author James Felton was one of many who shared his views on Lewis’ outfit in view of his 302,000 Twitter followers.
James was quick to point out that Lewis’ suit made it look like his legs were “getting married,” due to the veil skirt.
He quipped: “Are his legs getting married.”(sic)
Fans took to the comments section to share their thoughts.
Some disagreed with James’ views on Lewis’ outfit, with Twitter user @Soldier7Sixx writing: “He was one of the more normally dressed that night. Let’s not forget that he paid for a table and invited black designers to join him. Let’s focus on the good he does rather than his dress style.”
@jrh43 added: “Jesus, do none of you understand what the MET gala is? It is a charity event that raises money for the arts. The outlandishness is the point of it all, as most of the dresses/outfits are then auctioned off for charity.”
@andriagV penned: “The slip part is actually a theme that the designer has delivered throughout his current season show. Not sure why Lewis is a target for his outfit when there are many other quirky styles. It’s an arty charity event.”
However, others agreed with James, with @BrianDqpr wrote: “This is the sort of nonsense that happens when people have too much money.”

@smifffyd joked: “You’d have thought Lewis would get an automatic invite to such a prestigious event rather than having to climb in through the window.”
@dominicshaw67 quipped: “If he thinks he can get away with wearing curtains, he needs to pull himself together.”
Elsewhere, Lewis was praised by fans for buying a whole table at the Met Gala to highlight emerging black designers.
The F1 driver said he felt “really, really fortunate” that Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour agreed to host his table at the star-studded event.
He explained: “I’ve brought four incredible, young, black talented designers.
“So we’ve got a great host of people tonight and it’s about just highlighting beauty and excellence and talent.”
One of the four rising stars invited by Hamilton was Kenneth Nicholson.
Nicholson designed Lewis’ custom outfit for the Met Gala.
Lewis’ appearance at the Met Gala on Monday night came after he was hit by Max Verstappen’s tyre in a shocking crash.
He fortunately managed to avoid serious injury due to his halo – a protective titanium ring around his helmet – but the star was still hit on the head by the tyre.
