‘Magicians’ actors open up about last season’s major death
Despite having to say goodbye to actor Jason Ralph, who plays Quentin on Syfy’s “The Magicians,” the cast is hopeful for what the future of the show holds.
“Jason has been my scene partner for four years, so it’s been weird without him,” Olivia Taylor Dudley told Page Six at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. “I miss him like crazy, but it’s really fun also to explore my character without him there … It’s interesting to watch how she is without him in her life.”
Quentin died in the emotional Season 4 finale of the show, and while other actors have stayed on the show following their deaths, the producers confirmed Ralph, 33, would not be back.
Hale Appleman explained that Ralph leaving the show bonded the rest of the actors together.
“In the positive, it’s brought us together as a cast in a beautiful way that’s kind of remarkable for a show in its fifth season because we all shared Jason as a castmate and we have him in common, so not having him with us is something that in a way has sealed our bond in a completely new way that I think took everyone by surprise,” Appleman, 33, told us.
Dudley, 33, said she thinks the new season will be “cathartic” for fans of the show, who were unsurprisingly upset by the twist.
“Every character deals with [Quentin’s death] in such a unique way that I think everybody is going to relate to it,” she said. “I think everybody relates to loss and mourning someone they love … I think it’s going to be cathartic this season for fans. I would hope so, it was for me.”
As for the social media backlash that came with the decision to kill Ralph’s character, producer John McNamara told us, “We knew it was coming, but we also felt it was an important thing not to avoid on our show.”
The show returns for Season 5 in 2020.
