S Club 7 star Paul Cattermole has claimed his relationship with bandmate Hannah Spearritt was ‘written into their TV contracts’.

The former pop star, 42, who left the band in 2002 to form his own group Skua, claimed his romance with his co-star was part of the deal when they appeared on the show Hollywood 7, a spin-off of the band’s CBBC show Miami 7.

Speaking to the Guardian’s G2, he confessed he felt ‘forced’ and the romance ‘did not happen organically’, stating that it had been ‘written into the Hollywood 7 show’ and adding: ‘And because of that, it sort of happened.’

Hmm… S Club 7 star Paul Cattermole has claimed his relationship with bandmate Hannah Spearritt was ‘written into their TV contracts’ (pictured in 1999 in a promo shot for Miami 7)

S Club 7 – formed of Paul, Hannah, Tina Barrett, Rachel Stevens, Jo O’Meara, Bradley McIntosh and Jon Lee – were one of the most iconic bands of their time, selling over 10million albums worldwide, starring in their own TV series and winning two BRITs.

Paul left the group in 2002, citing ‘creative differences’, and the group changed their name from S Club 7 to simply S Club before splitting for good a year later.

Miami 7 was first aired in 1999 – getting around 90m viewers, before in 2001, the band starred in Hollywood 7 – and in the fifth episode, called The Kiss – which aired in October 2001 – Paul and Hannah kissed for the first time on screen.

Asked if he felt that he was ‘forced into the relationship’, he said: ‘Yeah, but like I say. It didn’t feel like that because I had totally grown into the idea, quite quickly…I thought she was great.’

By force? Speaking to the Guardian’s G2, he confessed he felt ‘forced’ and the romance ‘did not happen organically’, stating that it had been ‘written into the Hollywood 7 show’

He denied that he and Hannah were already dating at the time the show aired.

Hannah and Paul split up in 2006 and got back together for a few months in 2015 before calling it time on their relationship for good.

In 2017, she hit out at her former love for discussing their romance as she took to Twitter to write: ‘Cringe. Someone’s broke again…. Hilarious! #tragic’.

He also told the G2 supplement he was up for a ‘reunion tour’ to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album, but said it was ‘unlikely to happen’. He said: ‘The other guys know I’m up for doing it, but I don’t know what’s happening.’

Last year, Paul made an emotional appearance on Loose Women where he said he wanted to appear on a celebrity reality television show. Viewers were in tears after Paul confessed he was so poor that he couldn’t afford to buy a new shirt.

The star admitted he later sold the shirt the production team bought for him to wear during his Loose Women appearance. Yet taking to Twitter after the episode aired, the singer confessed that he didn’t keep the item.

Shock: S Club 7 were formed of Paul, Hannah, Tina Barrett, Rachel Stevens, Jo O’Meara, Bradley McIntosh and Jon Lee

He wrote: ‘Thanks to all the Ladies @loosewomen thanks for being so nice. I left the shirt in the dressing room. Just in case you though I had pilfered it.’

He added to his fans: ‘Thanks for all the support people, you are all awsome and I couldn’t do it without you. [sic] I would also like to say what an honour it was to be on the same show as – Sir Trevor McDonald . What a nice guy !’

During his interview, Paul revealed that he had fallen on hard times and has been experiencing money problems since being declared bankrupt in 2015.

Tough: During his interview, Paul revealed that he had fallen on hard times and has been experiencing money problems since being declared bankrupt in 2015

Speaking with Christine Lampard, Saira Khan, Nadia Sawalha and Jane Moore, the star revealed his financial woes have forced him to live off instant noodles and beg reality TV producers for work.

Admitting he was ‘nervous’ about appearing on the show as he was always used to being interviewed with the group, Paul recalled: ‘We toured the world, we are really good friends and was a lot of fun. I look back on those days very fondly. Possibly more fondly than ever before

‘I wouldn’t say it was the perfect life, as its not very easy when you’re doing a pop group thing, the perception on the outside is not what its like on the inside. But there were very fun times. You take the rough with the smooth.’

Then there was six… S Club 7 became simply S Club after Paul’s departure (pictured in 2003)
