Guilt-ridden TV star Stacey Solomon found herself consumed by conflict when she suddenly learnt at the 24 week mark that she was expecting her first child back in 2008. “I could have had an abortion,” she has revealed in an interview published in the Mail On Sunday’s You magazine today.
If I hadn’t had Zachary, would I have pushed myself as hard as I’ve done?
“We went to the clinic to see what my options were.
“It was definitely something I considered, because I thought my life would be over.
“That sounds awful and I feel guilty about it every day because Zach’s incredible, but it is what it is.”
She added compassionately: “I wouldn’t judge anyone for going through with it. It was just something I couldn’t do.”
There was little time for making decisions, as she had discovered the pregnancy late.
She had put her ravenous hunger down to the temptations of working in a chip shop and had no idea that she was carrying a developing young boy.
“I’ve never been a super-skinny girl and… I was eating a lot of saveloys,” she laughed.
“I finished them up at the end of my shift so they didn’t go to waste.
“Genuinely, I just thought, ‘God, I’ve got to lay off the food.’ I didn’t even click.”
Just 17 at the time, she hadn’t been tracking her periods, and no doubt dismissed any irregularities in them as simply being the rollercoaster of hormones that teenagers often experience.
However, she credits the birth as a turning point that gave her the ambition to work harder and achieve more.
“If I hadn’t had Zachary, would I have pushed myself as hard as I’ve done over the past 13 years? I don’t know that I would,” she remarked candidly.
Ultimately, the same situation that she once feared would end her life as she knew it had actually “made my life” instead.
Stacey’s latest arrival, Rose, represents the completion of her family.
The 32-year-old gave birth to her first – and only – daughter on her birthday this year.
She is ending on a high note, as this time she was able to give birth at home after just 40 minutes of contractions – something which she recalls made her feel “in control” and unable to stop smiling.
Rose joins young son Rex, who Stacey shares with fiancé Joe Swash, plus Zachary, 13, and Leighton, nine, from previous relationships.
Having also dealt with the trauma of a miscarriage between Rex and Rose, Stacey now believes she has had her final child.
“We have to live within our means,” she explained.
We want to be the best parents we can [and] I don’t want to push it any more. This is enough.”
