Exclusive: "Becoming a Popstar" Offers TikTokers the Opportunity of a Lifetime
MTV has teamed up with TikTok and Pepsi for a new kind of music competition series for today’s brightest internet stars called “Becoming a Popstar.” The five-episode series has selected eight up-and-coming TikTok stars — Alexi Blue, Amira Daugherty, Brian Vaulx Jr., Kyle Morris (KB), Lexie Hayden, Lynnea Moorer, Rachel Grae, and Samy Hawk — to show if they have what it takes to reach a new level of stardom. With a series of challenges and help from celebrity judges Joe Jonas, Becky G, and Sean Bankhead, only one lucky person will walk away a winner with their own Pepsi commercial, which will air during the 2022 MTV VMAs.
In an exclusive sneak peek of “Becoming a Popstar”‘s series premiere, the judges give the contestants a rundown of what to expect from their first challenge. “As you all know, before you arrived, you were tasked with creating a song and a video that reps your city,” Becky G says in the clip. Bankhead adds: “Your submissions got you in the door, but the real challenge starts right now.”
Each week, contestants will create original songs and accompanying one-minute music videos — which will first be featured on TikTok — to show all the ways TikTokers and their fans can engage and express themselves on the platform. The judges will then critique each person and narrow down the competition through eliminations until only two budding artists are left standing. From there, they’ll battle for the win in the finale to determine who will become a pop sensation.
