GMB's £500,000 competition winner celebrates by 'putting heating on'
Viewers of Good Morning Britain were left reeling at the bleakness of the cost of living crisis after the winner of the show’s £500,000 prize money celebrated by ‘putting the heating on’.
On Thursday’s show, Andi Peters interviewed Danielle, the winner of a recent competition who walked away with the £500,000 prize.
He asked her about what impact the windfall would have on her life amid the cost of living crisis the country is facing, and she revealed that her family would be able to afford Christmas presents and heating for the winter.
She told him: ‘The Christmas list has got a bit bigger, we weren’t going to do Christmas presents this year, we thought we’d cut back but now it feels like anything Is possible. It’s just amazing, it really is.’
Andi asked her: ‘We’re all living very difficult lives, will it make a life-changing difference to you?’
She responded: ‘Well yeah, we can pay the mortgage off. I mean I did celebrate on Tuesday by putting the heating on as well so that was a real treat’.
Viewers took to Twitter to share their horror at the dystopian situation the UK is living in, where heating your own home is considered a ‘real treat’ amid the cost of living crisis.
They commented: ‘Ffs winner of competition on itv @GMB said she celebrated by putting heating on ..this is the weird world we live in now.’
Another added: ‘this lady won £500.000million and as a treat she put the heating on. 2022, lovely #ToriesDestroyingOurCountry #ToriesCostLives’.
Some criticised the fact people have to pay to enter the competition when budgets are so tightly stretched at present, writing: ‘should you be really running competitions @£2 a entry’.
Despite the bleak situation most are going through, some viewers were uplifted by the fact Danielle will still enjoy a good Christmas, tweeting: ‘so happy for Danielle and her family so near to Christmas too congratulations. Absolutely brilliant.’
Another viewer added: ‘Loved hearing the half million £ winner on @GMB: “we treated ourselves and put the heating on”. Exactly what I would do! Who needs a Ferrari?!’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
