Here’s Why So Many Celebrities Dressed Up Like a Cat for the Met Gala
As expected, the 2023 Met Gala was stacked with show-stopping style and a handful of standout trends, from Barbiecore to black-and-white aesthetics. What wasn’t so expected of said trends, however, was for one of them to be dressing like a cat. From Jered Leto’s kitty couture take on Masked Singer to Doja Cat’s transformation into a literal cat, it seemed like feline was on the mind when coming up for a look for the 2023 Met Gala.
But it turns out so many celebrities were feeling feline furr a reason. The 2023 Met Gala theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty, an ode to the major creative force behind Chanel, Chloé, Balmain, and Patou, to name a few. The controversial designer, who passed away in 2019, was not only known for his daring looks, but also his beloved white Birman cat, Choupette. Here’s everything we know about the Choupette-inspired cat looks at the 2023 Met Gala and Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette, who is very much an icon in her own right.
All About Karl Lagerfeld’s Cat Choupette

When the model went abroad and the tortie Birman kitten stayed with Lagerfeld, however, the two bonded. Giabiconi ultimately gifted the kitten to Lagerfeld for Christmas in 2011. Like Lagerfeld, Choupette lives (she is still alive) a luxurious lifestyle complete with three personal maids and private jet flights.
She inspired the parody Twitter account @choupettesdiary in 2012, and people quickly became obsessed with the controversial designer’s cat. Lagerfeld himself was so obsessed that back in 2013 he said he wanted to marry his cat.
“There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat,” Lagerfeld told CNN’s Fashion Week: Backstage Pass.
After Lagerfeld’s passing in 2019, Choupette went to live with the designer’s ex-housekeeper in Paris. Now 11, she reportedly eats croquettes and pâte on the regular, still glamorous as ever.
Doja Cat’s Take on Karl Lagerfeld’s Cat

The singer paired facial prosthetics, cat ears, and a shimmery, slinky Oscar de la Renta hooded dress for her feline look. During an interview with Vogue on the red carpet, Doja cat said that she was “very, very excited and I love it,” of her look.
During an interview with Emma Chamberlain, however, Doja Cat took a more method approach. When Chamberlain asked about the dress, Doja Cat replied with a simple “meow.”
Lil Nas X’s Shimmering Choupette

The rapper wore a silver Dior thong, chunky platform boots, and silver body paint, all complete with glitter. The musician’s pearl and gemstone crown has feline features — namely the ears — and the glam monochrome palette screams Choupette.
Like Doja Cat, Lil Nas X also elected to stay very in character during an interview on the Met Gala carpet. When one reporter asked, “How long did this look take?” Lil Nas X responded with a series of meows and purrfect poses.
Jared Leto’s ‘Masked Singer’ Cat

When Leto first arrived, there was no telling it was him. The actor and 30 Seconds to Mars frontman didn’t opt for meows during interviews, but he did a handful anonymously before removing the mascot head for his big reveal.
