Martin Lewis had Good Morning Britain viewers tearing up at the end of Wednesday’s programme when he announced his hiatus from the programme with a powerful message.

The Money Saving Expert has been a regular fixture on the ITV programme, having answered important questions on energy bills, switching bank accounts, and savings, amid the soaring cost of living crisis.

However, Lewis will now be off screen for several months as he takes a break from presenting duties.

Announcing his temporary exit before the credits rolled, Lewis said: ‘This is my last programme before Christmas. I won’t be back until March because I’ve got my show coming on in the New Year.’

‘Can I just wish everybody a very Merry Christmas, a very Happy New Year, and, especially after a Million Minutes, to those of you who will be going through grief and loneliness this Christmas, may you have more smiles than you are expecting, may you have more joy than you’re expecting,’ he added.

‘And if not, I just hope you get through it and you get through it easily.’

Martin’s co-presenter Kate Garraway then turned to him and thanked him for ‘really helping a lot of people this year’.

Viewers were blown away by Lewis’s emotional sign off with several admitting that they cried.

That message bought tears to my eyes @MartinSLewis thank you, and a very merry christmas to you and your family

@MartinSLewis Well you made me cry this morning. What a beautiful soul you are. Merry Christmas to you and yours. 🎄❤️🙏

I swear @MartinSLewis moves me to tears every time I see him. Such a lovely human being. #gmb

@MartinSLewis I can’t tell you how much your words at the end of the segment meant to me personally. May only be words behind a screen, but I truly felt the love and care you have for people in that moment. 💙🙏

Lewis will return to television screens in the new year with a new series of The Martin Lewis Money Show, which he co-hosts with Angellica Bell.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
