Tombolo and New York’s Department of Sanitation Team Up for New Capsule Collection

New York brand Tombolo has become increasingly popular for its “Cabana” lifestyle aesthetic, and for Spring/Summer 2022 it has partnered with New York’s Department of Sanitation on a capsule collection that pays homage to the institution and its New York roots.

Co-founders and designers Michael Sard and Chris Galasso started the label in 2018 based on the ideology of “inactivewear for leisurely escapes,” but as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the designers realized the brand’s ethos (along with everyday life), had become interrupted. To pay homage to the people that keep NYC clean, safe and healthy, the designers teamed up with the DSNY on a collection that celebrates essential workers and recontextualizes the DSNY’s aesthetic hallmarks with items that include a short-sleeve shirt, shorts, a long-sleeved sweater and a souvenir cap. As terry cloth fabric is a mainstay in the brand’s seasonal collections, it shows up here in the green-and-white tie-waist shorts and white with green collar and pocketed full-zip shirt.

While each piece incorporates some usage of the DSNY’s iconic caduceus logo and forest green colorway, the slogan phrase “Keep New York City Clean,” also makes an appearance alongside the brand’s palm tree-and-cursive logo. Additionally, eco-friendly materials like TencelTM, organic cotton and organic canvas help to fill out the environmental aspect of the collection.

Remarking on the capsule and Tombolo’s NY heritage, Sard says, “We grew up in New York City with the iconography of the DSNY on every street corner – every wastebasket and garbage truck. The organization is the backbone of New York’s logistics.”

“Beyond what they do on a daily basis, the DSNY responds to crises: everything from a typical snowstorm to clearing debris after 9/11 or delivering more than a million meals a day to New Yorkers in need during COVID,” he adds.

To celebrate the capsule, Tombolo and the DSNY hosted a launch event at New York City’s Spring Street Salt Shed, and have announced that 10% of sales proceeds will go towards the organization’s Sanitation Foundation.

The collection is now available and can be shopped on the brand’s website, with prices ranging from $58 USD to $158 USD.
