We’re less than two weeks away from Hollywood’s biggest night. That’s right, the Academy Awards (aka the Oscars) are just around the corner. The Oscars are such an historic, culturally significant touchstone in Hollywood, with a storied history regarding the winners who walk away with that golden statuette. In the last 10 years, we’ve seen quite the array of Best Picture winners. From a history-making international win to stirring true stories, these films vary in size, scope, and story — and we think now’s a great time to revisit them with a look back at the movies that won from 2011 to 2021.
The past 10 Best Picture winners are as unique as the years in which they were crowned. Some films, like we said, highlight true stories — like Spotlight, Green Book, Argo, and 12 Years A Slave. Safe to say, the Oscars love a biopic or movie based on a true story.
Then there are films that challenge our notions of societal structures — see Parasite for a deep reading on capitalism, wealth disparity, and greed, or Moonlight’s beautiful meditation on one Black man’s journey to understand his identity and sexuality while growing up in Miami. Each of these films is so unique and brings a totally different meaning to what some might consider an “Oscar” movie. Perhaps one of your favorites is included in this list.
Before 2022’s Best Picture is finally unveiled during the March 27 live telecast on ABC, check out the last 10 Best Picture-winning movies and where you can stream them.
