7 best hair treatments and masks for 2022 to repair damage
Sure, we’re probably all aware of the damage that regular hair habits such as brushing, colouring and heat styling can create – but that doesn’t mean we should completely give up these feel-good grooming routines.
While nothing can beat a regular trim and professional treatment in the salon, nowadays there’s a vast array of at-home haircare products claiming to repair strands that are snapping off.
From deep conditioning masks to leave-on creams, these haircare products promise stronger, healthier hair – sometimes with immediate or overnight results.
But do they really work? Our beauty testing panel has put them to the test…
Best hair-repairing masks and treatments in 2022
Best for fighting frizz
Osmo Intensive Deep Repair Mask, £2.50 here
Tester Andrea says: “The texture is thick, creamy, a bit clay-like – but nice. My hair is thick, and can become a dry, tangled, frizzy dry mess. It also takes a battering with the bleach, tints and the vibrant colours I put in. This mask makes it feel soft and healthy, and my colours lasted longer and looked brighter. It also made my hair easier to style and stopped it pouffing up and frizzing.” 5/5
Pantene Overnight Beauty Reset 8H Active Serum, £19.99 here
Tester Yvonne says: “This is a must for anyone looking to repair damage to their hair. I felt confident from the first application that I was giving my hair the VIP treatment it needed. The texture is just right – lightweight and not too runny. I used a coin-sized amount on my thick afro hair, both after washing and on dry hair before bed, and in both instances it absorbed well and didn't leave any residue.
"My hair’s damage is visibly less and it feels much more hydrated and less brittle. My partner also said that my hair had a nice healthy glow to it. I'll definitely be investing in more of this when it runs out!”
Best for bleached hair
Aveda Botanical Repair Overnight Serum, £40 here
Tester Lucy says: “I used this after having my hair highlighted and my ends bleach bathed. My ends were extremely dry afterwards and I was worried I needed a cut, but this restored them. It left my hair soft, silky and strong with no sticky or clumpy residue the morning after. My friends were shocked by how healthy the ends of my hair looked after bleaching and not having a cut. I didn't believe a product could restore damaged ends, but this proved me wrong!” 5/5
Aussie Deeep Moisture Hair Mask, £9.99 here
Tester Natalie says: “I had high hopes that this would heal my frizzy, broken ends, but it seems to work on a less-is-more basis. If I leave it on for 3-5 minutes, my hair is smoother (although not as shiny as I had hoped) and easy to brush into a straight style. If I leave it on for much longer, it’s difficult to wash out. On the plus side, its jojoba scent is heavenly, and the generously sized pot will last a long time.” 4/5
Best pre-wash treatment
Philip Kingsley Carabao Mango & Hibiscus Elasticizer, from £22.50 here
Tester Maria says: “Great feel and a subtle, pleasant scent. It’s easy to apply as a treatment before shampooing. It left my hair deeply moisturised and looking shiny and super healthy. It ticks all the boxes for a deep conditioner. It is a bit expensive, but it's good so I would seriously consider buying it.” 5/5
Andrew Fitzsimons Restructuring 10 in 1 Leave in Conditioner, £11 here
Tester Lucinda says: “All the ticks – ten haircare benefits for a lazy person in one bottle! It gives me a glossy hairdo and no weight. It enhances my blow dry and makes curls last a bit longer. I also love that there’s thermal heat and UV protectant in there. In the evenings, I am washing my hair, spraying on a little 'Andrew', wrapping my hair in a microtowel and waking up to soft, untangled hair. It really does do everything. Super impressed!” 5/5
Best for helping with hair shedding
MONAT Damage Repair Bond Support Masque, £54 here
A deeply conditioning mask that softens strands while also instantly bonding damaged hair fibres.
Tester Mandy says: “An absolute miracle! I have problematic dry hair that’s prone to breaking due to post-Covid and menopause. This mask worked immediately after one application, and the results kept improving. There were visibly much fewer strands on my brush, and my hair was silkier, softer and less dull. I was even able to tolerate hair bands, which I have not been able to do for some time.
"People asked if I had been taking vitamins or supplements, as they thought my hair was looking in much better condition than it had in months. I now have the confidence to brush my hair. Pricey but worth every penny, and a game changer for weak hair. ”
