After Blackfish, the expose on orca mistreatment that aired last week, comes this documentary about the slaughter of dolphins in the Japanese fishing village of Taiji. Distressing scenes abound  and the nation’s whaling industry is once again called into question. What’s fascinating is the story of the man leading illegal dolphin-saving operations there. The reformed trainer on the 1960s series, Flipper, Ric O’Barry has dedicated his life to setting the sensitive creatures free.

With the old unconventional priest having followed his heart to America, the new unconventional priest, Will Davenport (Tom Brittney, Outlander) wastes no time in rubbing the good people of 1950s Cambridgeshire up the wrong way. His vices (a penchant for rock ’n’ roll and a disregard for church convention) pale in comparison to that of his predecessor. Initially reluctant to team up with the constabulary, he quickly finds his gift for amateur sleuthing.

Just in time for summer, the team tackles some season-specific issues affecting pets, including the dreaded paralysis tick, which in this case has bitten a German shepherd named Boston. While Dr Alex Hynes works on poor Boston, Dr Peter Ricci deals with a drooling guinea pig named Wolfgang; and Dr Danni Dusek tends to an orphaned joey. With the potential to inform and move, this is a great show for animal lovers.
