Chief executive Roger Whiteside, pictured, revealed in August that Greggs was planning a vegahn range, claiming demand for the sausage roll demonstrated customers’ tastes

Speaking on LBC radio, Mr Whiteside said the company was also working on a ‘special product’ but would not reveal what it was because it would ‘be giving away everything to our competitors’.

He added: ‘But I will say we are working away at seeing if we can come up with a vegan version of all our top-selling lines. Obviously people want a vegan option.

‘If we can succeed in doing that and produce something that tastes just as good as the meat version, then that will sell very successfully. That’s what’s been shown with the vegan sausage roll.’

Mr Whiteside said going into the vegan market was ‘in keeping with what our customers want to consume’.

MailOnline has contacted Greggs for comment.
