Guinness is giving away 5,000 free pints across the UK

Christmas is the best time of the year to stuff our faces with loads of food and alcohol.

Following research which found that nearly half of Brits feel forced into festive commitments in the run up to the festive period, Guinness is giving away 5,000 free pints.

It comes as the Irish Stout Giant found that Brits' favourite thing to do in the run up to Christmas is hang out with their close pals at the pub.

The research, commissioned by the Guinness team, found that 32% felt stressed when attending these "forced festivities", while 29% were just anxious.

Developed with Dr Gillian Forrester, Psychologist at the University of London, the Guinness team have set up a pint-sized pub in London which offers free booze to groups of friends.

But if you can't visit Flat Iron Square in the capital for a free drink, from today until December 16, Guinness is giving away pints in participating Greene King pubs.

Dr Gillian said: "Research shows that five is the optimum number of people to hang out with at any one time. Larger groups don't lend themselves to a deeper level of bonding that small gatherings afford.

"The closer social bonds found in small close-knit groups promotes successful collaborations, whether it be sport, cooking or enjoying a pint of Guinness during the holiday season.”

A spokesperson at Guinness added: "Given that 55% of people prefer the run up to Christmas to the day itself, we wanted to do something that would help people do what they actually want to do this festive season – catch up with friends over a pint.

“Too often we find that work and general life get in the way of hanging out with our closest mates, so hopefully this pub gives people the much-needed chance to enjoy quality Guinness time together.”

The Guinness pint-sized pub is open from 5-9 December and entry is free, but tickets are limited so you must reserve a spot via Design My Night or visit Flat Iron Square for walk-in sessions from Monday.

But for those not able to visit the pub, the Guinness team are giving away 5,000 free pints which are available while stocks last.

Participating Greene King pubs will serve the cold pint to Brits if they sign up here to redeem.
