The music world is mourning the loss of writer and megaproducer LaShawn Daniels. Daniels worked with some of the biggest artists in music across all genres, including pop, R&B, and gospel. Sadly, Daniels’ life was tragically cut short at the age of 41 after a fatal car crash, leaving behind a loving wife and three sons. Luckily, his music lives on forever. Much of his music has been the soundtrack of a generation.

Daniels worked with everyone from the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, to helping jumpstart Jennifer Lopez’s career with her debut single “If You Had My Love.” He leaves behind a beloved catalog that will be sure to earn millions even after his death.

Who is LaShawn Daniels?

Known in the industry as “Big Shiz,” Daniels began writing music in the late 80’s. He teamed up with Rodney “Darkchild” Jenkins and the two collaborated on songs for much of their careers.

Daniels’ songwriting credits include Whitney Houston (“It’s Not Right [But It’s Okay]”), Michael Jackson (“You Rock My World”) and Lady Gaga and Beyoncé (“Telephone”). He earned one Grammy Awards and several nominations. The first nomination came in 1998 for Brandy and Monica’s duet “The Boy Is Mine” and he won his first in 2001 for his work on Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name.”

Daniels spoke to in celebration of the 20th anniversary of “Say My Name” on the song’s impact. The song spent 12 weeks at number one on the Billboard charts and Daniels attributed the song’s success to its relatable message.

“I would be places, I would be at work, and if [my girlfriend] would call or hear anyone laughing, or speaking, or doing anything in the background, she’d be like, ‘Who is that?’” he said about his “insecure” ex. “Then she’d be like, ‘Well, say my name then, and tell me that you love me.’ [The song] was actually the premise of what I would go through, and we had the conversation of ‘how embarrassing is that?’ Beyoncé was in a relationship at that time, and she could relate well to the situation.”

Daniels is definitely a recognizable face. While he has worked hard behind the scenes writing and producing music for your favorite artists, Daniels has also appeared on your television screens.

Daniels and his wife April made their reality television debut on Season 1 of Tamar & Vince. The show followed the marriage of singer and reality star Tamar Braxton and her manager/husband Vincent Herbert. Daniels was not only close friends with the two, but he also played a pivotal role in Braxton’s superstardom. 

Daniels and Braxton worked hard on her album Love & War, with Daniels writing and producing the title track. The album was later nominated for a Grammy. He toured with the singer on her first solo tour around the country working as her musical director.

With the success of Love & War, Daniels and Braxton worked on her next album Calling All Lovers, and he remained a presence on the show until Season 4. Braxton was heartbroken by her friend’s death and posted a touching tribute to him on her Instagram page.
