Meet Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff
Good day to our nation's very first Second Gentleman of the United States. Vice President Kamala Harris's husband of six years, Douglas "Doug" Emhoff, is following in his wife's history-making footsteps as the first man to occupy the space of spouse to the vice president (or president, for that matter).
Here's everything you need to know about Emhoff as he and his wife enter office.
He’s Making History Twice Over
In addition to being the nation's first Second Gentleman, Emhoff is also the first Jewish spouse to a U.S. vice president.
Emhoff, Harris, and their "big modern family" celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas.
He Was an Entertainment Lawyer
Emhoff practiced entertainment law for decades. He became a partner at DLA Piper Law Firm in 2017 but made plans to leave after Harris was elected vice president.
With his move to Washington D.C., Emhoff has taken a teaching position at Georgetown Law. He'll begin his tenure by teaching a course called Entertainment Law Disputes.
"I've long wanted to teach and serve the next generation of young lawyers," Emhoff said in a statement on the school's website. "I couldn't be more excited to join the Georgetown community."
He’s Represented Both the Taco Bell Chihuahua and Pizza Rat (Sort of)
Emhoff was key in securing justice for the fast-food restaurant's iconic Spanish-speaking ("yo quiero Taco Bell") mascot … and the people who created it.
A Michigan-based company called Wrench claimed that Taco Bell had taken their original "psycho chihuahua" cartoon and developed it with a different agency. With help from Emhoff, Wrench won and Taco Bell took a $42 million hit.
But that's not the only instance of Emhoff fighting on behalf of a food-crazed four-legged creature. He also represented Jukin, the company behind Pizza Rat's viral emergence.
He and Kamala Harris Met on a Blind Date
Harris's friend Chrisette Hudlin met Emhoff through work. When Harris's name was broached in conversation, the lawyer "said something to the effect of 'She's really hot,'" Hudlin told Marie Claire.
Hudlin set the two up and they hit it off, with Emhoff emailing Harris the morning after their first date: "I really like you."
"I said something like, 'I'm too old to hide the ball,' Emhoff recalled in an interview with CNN. "'You're great. I want to see if we can make this work. Here's when I'm available next.' And I guess it worked."
He proposed less than a year later, in 2014, and they wed that August in Santa Barbara.
He Has Two Children
Emhoff and his first wife, Kerstin, share two children: Cole, 26, and Ella, 21.
"Cole, Ella, and I agreed that we didn't like the term 'stepmom,'" Harris wrote in a 2019 Elle essay. "Instead they came up with the name 'Momala.'"
Cole and Elle are adapting to the new spotlight.
"It's weird to turn on CNN and see my dad," Cole told the New York Times in a recent interview.
"I think the idea of sharing our parents with the world is kind of insane," Ella added. "Like, it's a really cool thing to wrap your head around — because you get to share all the great things — but it's also like, Huh?!"
