Meghan Markle Requested These Songs at the Royal Wedding

It’s been over a year since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding on May 19, 2018, and the world can’t stop talking about the royal extravaganza.

DJ Big Driis — aka Idris Elba — is the latest to open up about the ceremony, sharing the deets regarding the songs the Duchess of Sussex requested at the royal wedding.

She gave him a lengthy setlist

In a new interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, Elba told the host that Markle gave him a “playlist with some bare tunes on it.” When pushed to reveal the songs, the Luther actor reluctantly said, “There was some West Coast on it.”

So did that include Tupac or Dr. Dre? Well, the host tried to ask, but Elba said he wasn’t going to “put their business out there like that.” He added, “Seriously, ask Meghan and Harry.”

Oh well. Can’t hurt to ask.

He did share at least one track, though, telling the host that he played Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Sources previously told Us Weekly that he also played Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much,” and that Elton John performed a series of songs, including “Circle of Life,” and “Tiny Dancer.”

How Elba became the wedding DJ

Elba opened up about how he secured the gig during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in February. According to the actor, the opportunity caught him off guard.

“So Harry and I, we’ve hung out a couple of times through his dad’s charity, The Prince’s Trust, helped me out as a young actor,” Elba explained. “And so I do a lot of work with them; met Harry and William a few times. And Harry came to a couple of parties that I DJed, and he was like, ‘Hey man, what are you doing on that date?’ And I go, ‘Ah nothing.’ And he goes, ‘Hmm, would you DJ at my wedding?’”

Elba said he couldn’t believe it, asking, “Is this a joke? Are you joking?” Prince Harry then told him that he was “serious,” and the rest is history.

What the duchess likes to listen to

Markle doesn’t just listen to the music of the West Coast — she listens to artists from all over. Back in 2017, she shared a playlist to her (now-shuttered) lifestyle blog, The Tig, which she described as a “fresh dose of unbridled joy.”

According to Elle, the playlist featured a variety of musicians, such as the Crystal Fighters, Maggie Rogers and Janelle Monáe. “Turn these tracks on as you’re getting ready in the morning, when you need a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, or during your next evening celebration,” she wrote. “Because when the air is filled with positive vibes, there’s no winter cold that can block out the warmth of happy hearts,” she continued.

Elle added that the list shows that Markle is “more of an indie/festival kid, with a penchant for listening to the likes of Dragonette and Mr Little Jeans.”

Because The Tig is shut down, the playlist is no longer available. But an internet user replicated it on Spotify for your listening pleasure. The songs include “Sunshine” by Flight Facilities and Reggie Watts, and “Dance Apocalyptic” by Janelle Monáe.

You’re welcome.
