My life has been falling apart since my dad died two years ago

DEAR DEIDRE: SINCE my father died two years ago my life has been falling apart. I haven’t lived anywhere permanently, spending my nights in hostels or on the street.

I even managed to get evicted from the last hostel for fighting with another guy.

I’m 55 and used to live with my dad in his bungalow but it was sold after he died.

I stupidly spent what little money I had on alcohol, then lost my building job.

My caseworker found me accommodation, but I even messed that up by spending my rent money on booze.

Drinking makes me forget my troubles, but I know it’s not a long-term solution.

And now as the streets are getting colder I’m dreading a winter sleeping rough.

My life’s such a mess.

The homelessness charity Shelter can offer some guidance (shelter.org.uk, 0808 800 444).

Alcohol can seem to offer an escape but in reality it makes things worse.
