A bizarre trick of the brain makes you see colour when in reality there's only black and white, in a phenomenon explained by an NHS surgeon.

In a video titled "I'm going to make you hallucinate", doctor and TikTok user Dr Karan Raj @dr.karanr shows off a mind-boggling optical illusion.

The educator, who uses his channel to share incredible facts about science and medicine, displays an image of trees with highly vivid purple and orange colours and a black circle in the centre.

He says: "Keep staring at the black dot in the middle of the image and I'll explain how your brain lies to you and constantly makes things up.

"As you keep focusing on the black dot, the cone cells in your retina become desensitised to the colour you can see and tones down the oranges and purples and tones up the colours complementary to these.

"So when I change the image to black and white, your brain fills in the gaps with these complementary colours to maintain the illusion of normality."

The image then flips to black and white and viewers freak out when their brains actually show them blue skies and green trees – even though the colours aren't really there.

Unsurprisingly, the jaw-dropped video has been watched more than 14 million times since it was uploaded yesterday, April 5.

One shocked viewer commented: "It was there then it wasn’t."

"THIS WAS SO SCARY WOW," said another.

A third user simply stated: "My brain is a lie."

"Does that mean we live in a black and white world?" questioned someone else.

"I had to test it wow this was real," gushed another fan.

Sounding amazed, a user wrote: "I didn’t even have to look at the black dot to see the green lol although it quickly turned to black and white."
