Princess Diana Never Liked Donald Trump, Here's Why

When Donald Trump visited the U.K. in early June, he was met with a wave of protests. These protests ranged from enraged to downright hilarious. Between a blimp of a Baby Trump aimed at the President’s reputation for throwing tantrums and people selling rolls of toilet paper with Trump’s face on them, it’s clear that not everyone was excited about the visit. That included members of the royal family.

Meghan Markle, who was a vocal supporter of Trump’s opponent Hillary Clinton, missed his visit entirely due to her maternity leave. Prince Harry also kept his distance from Trump throughout the visit. Many have speculated that it is because of Trump’s “nasty” comments about both Markle and the late Princess Diana.

In fact, Trump’s past comments about Princess Diana were likely looming large for all of the royal family members. Though, they did manage to keep their composure for the public eye.

Just what is it that made Princess Diana so uneasy about Trump? Read on to find out.

Trump aggressively pursued Princess Diana despite her lack of interest

Back in 1995, Princess Diana was a recently divorced single mother who was very much in the public eye. Naturally, she was attracting the attention of many potential suitors. Trump was among them. Selina Scott, a British TV broadcaster and friend of Princess Diana, revealed that Trump’s unwanted attention toward the princess reached near-stalker levels. Diana was not flattered and told Scott that Trump gave her the “creeps.”

Trump and Diana brushed elbows at charity events. Most notably, they were seated together at a Manhattan dinner designed to honor Diana with a humanitarian award. Trump allegedly offered her a free membership to his Mar-a-Lago golf resort, but she declined.

Despite her lack of interest, Trump lavished her with flowers and handwritten notes that simultaneously expressed sympathy about her divorce and suggested that she should date him.

He later wrote in The Art of the Comeback, after Princess Diana had tragically died, that he regretted never getting a chance to have a relationship with her. “I only have one regret in the women department – that I never had the opportunity to court Lady Diana Spencer,” he admitted.

Many saw his obsession with both her beauty and her popularity as an attempt to land a “trophy wife” that would elevate his own status and reputation. Even worse, Trump continued to remark publicly on his desire for a relationship with her even after she died.

Trump made shocking comments about the princess after her death

In 1997, shortly after Princess Diana’s death, Trump did an interview with infamous shock jock Howard Stern. During the interview, Stern referred to Trump’s comments about wanting a shot with Diana: “Why do people think it’s egotistical of you to say you could’ve gotten Lady Di? You could’ve gotten her, right? You could’ve nailed her.”

Trump affirmed Stern’s crass observation. “I think I could have,” he explained. “She was actually really beautiful. I thought she was supermodel beautiful.”

Bizarrely, Trump then went on to speculate about how dating him could have saved Diana’s life. He said of the tunnel where Diana’s fatal crash took place, “I know that tunnel in Paris. It’s got, like, a 30-mile limit. If you look at this tunnel — and I really know that tunnel well, I’ve been through that tunnel many times — you can’t go more than like 30, 40 miles.”

Focusing on his ability to “nail” the beloved woman and then suggesting he would have prevented her death even as the world still freshly mourned her was definitely seen in poor taste. It’s unlikely that the royal family has forgotten these remarks.
