Server gets surprise $1,000 tip from mysterious man

One mysterious benefactor left some major green after enjoying his red sauce.

A server at Mama Catena, an Italian joint in Euclid, Ohio, got the shock of her life after a guest left about an 877 percent tip, or $1,070, on his bills for dinner with his wife and a bottle of wine to take home. Sam Meyer, the lucky waitress, told Cleveland’s Fox 8 that the generous act “made her month.”

The unnamed gentleman left not one but two large tips after his dinner at Mama Catena, Meyer said.

“He had left me a $100 tip [on his meal], so I turned around and said, ‘Sir, I think you made a mistake,’ ” Meyer told Fox 8. “He said, ‘No, I didn’t make a mistake, you were wonderful, this place is wonderful. I’d like you to have a good night.’ ”

Meyer said she “got a little choked up” when she saw the big tip, but when the guests ordered a bottle of $30 wine and left an additional $970 on the order, she “couldn’t even move, I was so shocked.”

Meyer, who says she had spent her shift “thinking that I have so much that I have to pay in the next week,” was able to catch up with the couple in the parking lot, but they wouldn’t reveal their identity.

“I said, ‘Who are you?’ ” says Meyer. But the man declined to take credit for his good deed. “He said, ‘Turn around and go back inside. I’m happy to do it.’ ”

Meyer payed it forward by sharing her tiptop tip with her co-workers.

The Catena sisters, Rina and Fran, who own the pizza and pasta joint, called the man “a kind person” and “our angel.”

Meyer isn’t the only waitress to receive an enormous tip. Last year, a server at a restaurant in North Carolina was given a $10,000 cash tip by a patron who ordered two waters. Alaina Custer, the lucky employee of Sup Dogs in Greenville, was shocked when she saw the gracious gratuity.

“It was a giant stack of hundreds. I was shaking and just kept asking, ‘What is this?’ I thought someone was playing a joke on me,” she said at the time.
