Snow and high winds to blast UK during unsettled few days

High winds and snow is expected to hit parts of the UK as the country braces for an unsettled weekend.

Most of the country is forecast to see a mixture of wet and windy weather as we head to the weekend, with gales likely in the south of England tomorrow.

Parts of northern Wales, northern England and the north Midlands could also be hit with snow falling on lower ground bringing some travel distrption.

The Met Office said there is potential for warnings to be issued in some areas.

Snow is also forecast to fall this evening, but mainly on higher ground in the northern Pennines and parts of Scotland.

Met office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: "Generally we have an unsettled picture for the UK over the next few days.

"Overnight tonight we are looking at a lot of cloud, with outbreaks of rain – most areas will see some rain ovrnight.

"There could be snow on high ground across the north – but mainly above 300m-400m.

"Most places will escape the frost this evening."

The south and south west of the country is looking at a windy start to tomorrow – with possible gales predicted.

Marco added: "Again, tomorrow is a windy picture down towards the south and south west with some gales possible especially in the south and south west – generally speaking a fairly unsettled day.

"There'll be showers at time in the north. Southern and eastern parts of England are most likely to see dry and bright spells.

"Tomorrow night there's a chance of very windy weather moving across the south of England with English Channel gales moving in.

"Elsewhere again, it is very showery tomorrow night and most areas becoming quite windy through the night.

"There is the potential for other warnings to be issued."

On Saturday, snow could fall in lower ground.

Marco said: "Sat is a windy, showery day and as we go into Saturday evening we could see a spell of windy weather moving across England and Wales.

"As that comes across there's also a chance of snow in north Wales, northern England and north Midlands – places like the peak district.

"Theres a chance it could fall to lower levels on Saturday night."

Five day forecast


Colder with rain. In the evening, rain will affect most areas but clear spells and showers are likely in Wales and south-west England. Snow is likely at times over northern hills. Through the night, rain will slowly clear eastwards, but Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern and eastern England will remain wet. Windy


It will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and hill snow in the north and east. It will be dry and bright for a time in Wales and southern England before outbreaks of rain spread into the south-west during the evening. There will be a brisk westerly breeze. Temperatures slightly below average


On Saturday it will be bright with showers. The showers will be heaviest and most frequent in the west, some of which may be wintry. Strong south-westerly winds. Sunday is forecast to be cloudy with rain in southern parts of England and Wales. It will be bright with wintry showers in the north


More rain is expected but it should be milder. It will again be cold is Scotland.
