Suspected paedo hid in underground bunker with pedal generator for three years
A suspected paedophile has been captured by police after hiding out in a makeshift secret underground bunker for three years.
Jeremiah Button, of Wisconsin, US was charged with first degree child sexual assault and possession of child pornography in 2015.
He had been released on bail for about a year and a half when he vanished – just two weeks away from his trial.
But last week a hunter Thomas Nelson called the police after discovering Button's den, which is powered by solar panels and a even pedal generator.
Button was then arrested after 20-minute standoff with police.
It is thought Button built the bunker, which is located on land near the town of Ringle, Wisconsin in the run-up to his court date.
Upon entering officers were stunned to discover electronic equipment such computers, television, radio and a stash of tinned food.
Button had installed solar panels on the roof to power three car batteries inside the structure, which ran to LED lights, radios and miniature cooling fans.
What's more, Button he had even built a water filtering water device in the bunker, which is carved into an embankment.
Police say when they captured Button he had a "welcoming attitude" and "grateful for human interaction".
Deputy Matt Kecker said: "He told us that he was wanted through Portage County for numerous warrants.
"He said the initial build took him from the time he got out (on bail) to the time he disappeared.
"It was roughly about half this size, but as he started bringing stuff back from the landfill that he needed to make his life more comfortable, he had to expand. So he dug out even further into the wall."
Button has even installed a bike-powered generator for the days when the sun can’t power the batteries from the solar panels on the roof.
Button told officers he had almost no human contact during his time in the wilderness, apart from a few encounters with hikers.
Detective Lieutenant Jeff Stefonek , another one of the officers who stormed the bunker, said: "He was not only surviving, but thriving in this structure through all of the different supplies he was able to find."
Mr Nelson said when he entered the bunker he discovered Button 'laying on a bed inside'.
