Long hot summer nights not only make it hard for you to sleep but they also impact your overall productivity and mood the next day. 

And according to the Sleep Health Foundation, one third of Australians regularly suffer from inadequate amounts of sleep. 

Experts from ResSleep have revealed simple tips to help you get a better rest during a hot summer night, without running up an astronomical electricity bill.

1. Keep your windows open

While most people would close their windows to keep the heat out, it actually makes your room warmer.

According to experts, air throughout the night is often cooler then the early hours of the morning and can keep room temperatures down. 

The fresh air circulation prevents the room from becoming hot and stuffy and helps you get a better nights sleep.

2. Freeze your sheets

Getting into a damp bed on a hot summer’s night definitely makes it harder for you to fall asleep but freezing your sheets could be the solution. 

Folding your bed sheets into a plastic bag and placing them in the freezer for several minutes will help cool your body temperature down.

3. Keeping pets off the bed

While you may love snuggling up to your four legged friends at the end of a long day, it can actually make it harder for you to fall asleep in summer.

Experts have revealed that added heat will make it harder for your body to cool down to the right temperature.

Even snuggling up to your partner can make it difficult for you to cool down and get a better sleep.

4. Body position

You might be keeping your windows open and avoid snuggling but even the position you sleep in can make a difference.

According to ResSleep, sleeping in a starfish position by stretching out your legs and arms across the bed is simple yet effective.

It helps keep your body temperature down by reducing sweat and also increases air circulation.

5. Turning off all lights

Sleeping in the dark not only helps the room stay much cooler but it also helps keep melatonin – also known as the ‘sleep hormone’ – levels down. 

Lights bulbs give off heat so the less light in the room, the cooler it remains and the more chance you have of getting a good night sleep. 

It’s also important to turn off all electronics as they give off light and can reduce the quality of one’s sleep.

6. Loose pyjamas

This is yet another simple but effective way to help reduce your body temperature at night.

Wearing loose cotton pyjamas can keep away heat and allows for air flow, which can help cool you down.

The material also absorbs excess sweat from the skin and doesn’t cling to your body during the night.
