Voice of the Mirror: Kim Darroch being forced to quit is betrayal of our nation

Sir Kim Darroch’s dignified resignation as our man in Washington stands in stark contrast to the yellow-bellied behaviour of those who forced him out.

His departure became inevitable after Boris Johnson threw him under Donald Trump’s presidential limo.

When a foreign leader belittles your PM and starts dictating who serves as your ambassador, you stand up to them. Mr Johnson shamed the nation with his craven response.

Sir Kim was a pawn in a much bigger game.

He was targeted as he was viewed by Brexiteers as sympathetic to the EU and an obstacle to a more slavish ambassador in Washington.

In their desperation to secure a post-Brexit trade deal with the US, the Brexiteers destroyed the career of a most respected diplomat and humiliated the UK on the world stage.

They have dragged us away from Europe and want to place us at the mercy of a president who should be served with an ASBO.

The next humiliation would be a trade deal that lets US firms export their chlorinated chicken and batter down the doors of our NHS.

So much for seizing back control.

Pension scam

Thousands of women have been penalised by the change in the retirement age.

Now they are being punished yet again for taking time out of work to raise a family or look after an elderly relative. A report says women have £106,000 less in pension pots than men.

The shortfall is compounded by the fact they often earn less than their male counterparts and are more likely to be in part-time jobs.

Auto-enrolment is helping bridge the gap, but more must be done to help women remain in work. That means providing better childcare and social care.

Joy all family

Rumours of tensions between the royals were laid to rest by the pictures of William, Kate, Harry, Meghan and their children.

The dukes were there to play polo, the rest of them were playing happy families.
