Amanda Abbingtons whirlwind romance with daredevil whos now paralysed

Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington has opened up about the accident that left her fiancé paralysed.

42-year-old Abbington is engaged to escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, who shot to fame after he appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in 2019.

Amanda revealed that the Welsh daredevil became paralysed in 2021 after an accident during rehearsals for America's Got Talent : Extreme.

Opening up about the accident on Jay Rayner's Out To Lunch podcast, the Mr Selfridge actress said: “He's paralysed now he's in a wheelchair.

“Unless there's a kind of stem cell surgery or that thing that Elon Musk is designing with the little chip, he'll be like that forever.”

The pair hadn’t been together long, but shortly after his accident last year Goodwin confirmed their engagement on Instagram when he referred to Amanda as his “fiancée”.

Abington’s whirlwind romance with daredevil Jonathon Goodwin

Amanda and Jonathan’s relationship started online. The couple had first been friends on social media for over 10 years. Amanda said she followed Jonathan because her son thought he was “amazing”.

But in January 2021 Amanda’s four-year relationship with The Queen's Gambit star Jonjo O'Neill ended and Jonathan also split from his wife.

After this, the pair connected and had a whirlwind romance. At first, they would speak for hours over the phone and later Goodwin flew the actress to Vienna so they could meet for the first time.

It was love at first sight, and within just 30 minutes of meeting the stuntman had already proposed.

Speaking about the engagement on Instagram, Amanda said: “When you know, you know. I knew straight away. Within hours.

“My person is one of the kindest, sweetest, most amazing, incredible, talented, funny, brave, unstoppable, fearless and beautiful humans on the planet,”

But the loved-up couple's lives were shattered when Goodwin had his accident just a few weeks later.

How was Jonathan Goodwin paralysed?

Amanda has spoken about how her fiancé nearly died twice during his accident in rehearsals for America’s Got Talent: Extreme.

Jonathan had been attempting to perform a stunt that would see him escape from a straight jacket while hanging upside down 30 feet in the air in between two suspended cars.

But the cars were released too early and Goodwin was crushed between them as they set on fire, he also missed the mattress that was meant to break his fall and hit his head on the ground.

Amanda told the Out to Lunch podcast: “He fell 30 feet and lost a kidney, broke both shoulder blades, shattered both legs.

“Third-degree burns, broke his spine and severed his spinal cord and, nearly died. And then on the operating table, he nearly died again.”

Amanda’s previous relationship with Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman

Amanda’s marriage to stuntman Jonathan will be her first, although the Sherlock actress was previously in a long-term relationship with co-star Martin Freeman, who she has two children with.

The pair were married on-screen but they never tied the knot off-screen and in 2016 the couple split amicably after 16 years together.

Announcing their split in an interview with the Financial Times, Martin Freeman said: "I’m not with Amanda anymore. It’s very, very amicable — I’ll always love Amanda."
