Ben Shephard praises Kate Garraway on her positivity amid husband’s battle

Ben Shephard has expressed his admiration for his Good Morning Britain co-host Kate Garraway as her husband Derek Draper remains in hospital.

Derek, 53, was struck down with Covid-19 in March and rushed to hospital – with Kate told on numerous occasions that her husband would not make it.

While Derek is now free of coronavirus, he remains in hospital as the Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on his internal organs.

Ben, 45, has praised Kate for remaining positive during the difficult time and still being a mother to her two children, Darcey and William.

"Going through Covid, one of my very good colleagues Kate (Garraway) has been very seriously affected in her family and Billy and Darcy are similar ages to Sam and Jack and they're good friends…" Ben said during Dave Berry’s podcast Dadpod.

"The support and the outpouring of love and generosity of spirit from the British public has been incredible… when you see how she's approached it, when you see the positivity which she's taking it.

Speaking about his own children, Sam and Jack, and how they are dealing with the pandemic, Ben continued: "And when I see the boys and how they're attacking life, and they're not letting it get in the way of what they're going through.

"It makes me very proud and it also, sort of, redoubles your effort to make sure that, you know, we can keep the stories current and tangible, that hopefully, we can present it in a way that can make some change.

"Sadly, at the moment there is a lot of frustration, despair, bad news and continuing trauma for all of us and we do worry that the damage that we are doing to young people.

"But, I think the thing that gets you through those trickier days when you're dealing with really tough stories or tough subject matter is coming home and seeing them (his kids) and seeing the optimism and the hope and the need to keep striving for things to improve for them.

"To find a base whereby they can build on their life in a creative and constructive way that will make a difference, hopefully," Ben added.

"Occasionally, it's been tough, it's been really tough for family reasons and for personal reasons."

Just a few weeks ago, 53-year-old Kate said she felt "physically sick" at the thought of spending Christmas without Derek.

Referring to potential government restrictions, the television host explained: "I feel physically sick actually and can feel my chest tightening at the thought of it.

"I'm in total panic about the idea of me, Darcey and Billy on our own this Christmas unable to visit Derek because of potential restrictions.

"That huge emotional hole, and I don't know how to fill it, without grandparents and without friends helping to fill it.

"It feels like such a significant moment as all festivals are. I do feel in a panic about it, but we're in this situation because of the spread of a disease that at the moment doesn't have a cure," Kate added.
