Britney Spears can finally celebrate her freedom after her conservatorship has come to an end after 13 years.

The 39-year-old pop star has been under the control of her father Jamie Spears and her co-conservators since her public breakdown in 2008.

A judge in Los Angeles terminated her conservatorship and allowed the Hit Me Baby One More Time to regain control of her life and career including her estimated $60 million estate on Friday.

The conservatorship had long angered the singer's global fanbase, but pressure to terminate the legal agreement really kicked in over the last 12 months.

Prior to 2020, the star has remained silent about her legal bindings but the singer shared her grievances with the public after she shared a tearful testimony over the phone back in June.

She alleged the arrangement, which is usually issued for those who are seriously ill or elderly, was abusive and deprived her of many basic human rights including the right to get married and have more children.

Judge Brenda Penny ruled her legal restraints should come to an end after the superstar's lawyer Matthew Rosengart asked the judge to end her conservatorship without a medical evaluation.

Judge Brenda Penny told the courtroom: "The conservatorship of the person and the estate of Britney Jean Spears is hereby terminated."

The judge's decision was the culmination of years of public and private legal wrangling from multiple parties who faced allegations that they did not have the singers best interests at heart.

The news was met with wild celebrations by dedicated #FreeBritney supporters who travelled to support the singer outside the courtroom.
