Eamonn Holmes tearful as he remembers late dad in emotional interview

This Morning host Eamonn Holmes broke down in tears as he remembered his late father in an emotional new interview.

The 61-year-old presenter said that he still "misses him every day", following his dad Leonard's tragic heart attack at the young age of 65 back in 1991.

Eamonn was emotional as he paid tribute to his beloved dad on RTE' One's The Meaning of Life on Sunday .

Sharing a clip of the interview, he wrote: "He's been gone 31 years now but I still miss him every day. I can’t recall my late Father without thinking of how he always wanted to provide, even when I had a successful career. I think like all of us he just liked to be needed.

In the clip, the presenter told Eamonn: "It's very unusual for a man to be so tactile."

Fighting back tears, Eamonn replied: "Yeah, but he'd just… give us a big hug, whatever. You know and all he did was say things like, 'Do you need any money?'

"And I was on Ulster television and I was earning £12,000 a year. He wasn't earning £12,000 a year or anything near it.

"My mum said to me one day, 'Let him give you some money'. So I did, I was like, 'Yeah, dad' and he gave me £20."

Eamonn received a wave of support from his friends in the industry – including fellow broadcasters Piers Morgan and India Willoughby.

Taking to Twitter, India wrote: "Oh Eamonn. This made me cry. Your dad sounds amazing. Is there a way we can watch on the mainland?"

Former GMB anchor Piers shared a crying emoji along with a heart.

In 1991, Eamonn's late dad passed away after a caravan holiday in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland.

Leonard had been spending time with Eamonn's mum Josie and his brothers Conor and Coln on the trip.

Leonard fell ill as he was driving back home from the holiday and was soon forced to pull over to the side of the road.

Sadly, he suffered a fatal heart attack as Eamonn's family tried to get him help as they were stuck in the countryside.

Eamonn's family friend John Linehan happened to be in the area and he rushed to help whilst the devastated family were waiting for an ambulance.

Recalling the incident in his 2006 autobiography, This Is My Life, Eamonn said: "When John got to the car, Daddy was still in the driver’s seat. Mum had already flagged someone down who telephoned for help,

"Conor, loyal to the end, took on the role of an adult and was still on the back seat, leaning over holding on to his dad.

"He grew up a lot that night. Realising his distress, [our family friend] John steered him away from what was going on. He then knelt beside Dad.

"As they waited for an ambulance, John kept talking to him until he became unconscious. He tried to resuscitate him but by the time the ambulance crew got there it was too late.

"At sixty-five years old, before he could retire from work and spend many more days with Mum, a heart attack had taken my dad away from us."
