Sir David Jason says Del Boy’s three-wheeled ‘stinky’ motor ‘was hell on wheels’

Sir David Jason despises Del Boy’s three-wheeled motor as it stank and was so uncomfortable to sit in while filming.

The Only Fools And Horses veteran now calls the yellow Reliant Regal vehicle “hell on three wheels” as he also hated its dodgy gearbox.

David, 80, said: “The Reliant we had to drive in Only Fools was hell on three wheels.

“It was probably the most uncomfortable, noisy, smelly car ever.

“It had a crashed gearbox and the seats were all ripped but we had an affection for it.

“It was a genius idea by the writer John Sullivan to get the Trotters driving around in a cheap little vehicle, but I wouldn’t drive one now if you paid me.”

Keen flyer David said he now loves sitting in the cockpits of helicopters – as he wants to beat the world record for being the oldest person to fly a chopper.

Speaking to Saga magazine, he said: “It’s the best thing outside acting I’ve ever done.

“As I got more successful, I could afford to fly more helicopters, which I did in my sixties.

“The oldest person to fly a helicopter solo was a mere 87 years old. I’d love to take that record away from him.”

David added he wishes older folk had “more confidence in asserting themselves”.

He said: “Have a go at life, it’s still open to you – it’s up to you to grab it.”

Meanwhile, an Only Fools fan has got a cushty business idea for sale – a £14,000 Del Boy coffee van.

His replica of the Trotters Independent Traders vehicle has been adapted to sell brews out of the back.

The owner, from Hull, is flogging The Cushty Coffee business on eBay.
