The Weeknd's Face Is Back to Normal in Super Bowl Halftime Show Teaser
The Weeknd has said goodbye to his face prosthetics, which had fans speculating if he went under the knife (he didn’t). After arriving at the 2020 Video Music Awards with a bloody face and then attending the 2020 American Music Awards with a bandaged face, the world was… confused. Soon after, fans realized it was all part of his After Hours album promotion. When he released his “Save Your Tears” music video on Jan. 5, we finally saw that he was wearing prosthetics that looked like botched plastic surgery.
Now, he’s returned to The Weeknd we all know and love for a Super Bowl performance teaser video. He was selected in November 2020 to perform at the halftime show, and the new promo captures the excitement that we’re all feeling. I mean, who else is watching the game just to see his performance? I know that I’m not alone in this.
As for his face, that was always a creative decision. It was a way to embody his music. “This is strictly performance art,” a source told Us Weekly. “The Weeknd is wearing prosthetics as part of the character he’s been playing since November 2019 when he launched the After Hours era.”
If you’re confused as to what having an injured face has to do with his album, well, it’s actually pretty simple. “‘Blinding Lights’ [is about] how you want to see someone at night, and you’re intoxicated, and you’re driving to this person and you’re just blinded by streetlights,” he said in an Esquire September cover story. “But nothing could stop you from trying to go see that person, because you’re so lonely. I don’t want to ever promote drunk driving, but that’s what the dark undertone is.”
But one question remains: Which version of The Weekend is going to perform at the Super Bowl?!
