Peaky Blinders: Why did Tommy Shelby become a gangster? Cillian Murphy reveals shock truth

Peaky Blinders picks up on Tommy Shelby’s (played by Cillian Murphy) story after he returns from World War One. While some aspects of his past have been hinted at throughout the series, a new Steven Knight audio story reveals the most yet. Read by Cillian Murphy, the short clip explains what drove Tommy to become the brutal man he is today.

Why did Tommy Shelby become a gangster?

Earlier this week, Steven Knight uploaded two short audio stories to peakyblinders.tv looking at the past of his cast of characters.

Each narrated by Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy, the two poems reveal more about the stories of their beloved roles.

In a short poem entitled The Ballad of Tommy Shelby, Murphy narrates the story of the notorious gangster Tommy Shelby as a young child through to his experiences in the war.

The moving piece contains some interesting revelations of Tommy as an intense young tearaway on the streets of Birmingham.

Fans of the series find out that he has always had his iconic stare ever since he used to scare his neighbours by appearing from the fog with a stick.

Tommy’s love of horses is also explored throughout, as listeners learn that he once tried to kill a man to save one.

However, the majority of the poem focuses on Tommy’s experiences in World War One and the trauma he faced after enlisting in 1915.

The Knight-written clip also reveals for the first time what Tommy’s explicit motive was in the developing the Peaky Blinders into a notorious gang.

Beginning with the anger he felt against those who sent him to the front, the poem charts his disillusionment with religion and authority.

He reads: “He went away in a ship to fight a million other kids and they all drew straws to see who eventually died.

“And the kid came home knowing everyone but the horses lied.”

This seemingly leads him to ignite a battle of his own when he returns against those who sent him there.

He continues: “So we’re burning all the bridges and burning the past and we’ll tell the sons of b******* that this is a new day.”

The poem ends with Tommy returning from the war, the hardened man that viewers get a glimpse of in the first season of the show.

He said: “Then by some miracle, they sail you home to the place you used to be.”

“I got out of the hole and into a Mercedes Benz and I drove to the place the old morality ends.

“I became the solider of the living lost, the king and protector of the forgotten past, never once remember anything except what must come next.

“You must never, ever forgive me for the rest of what I did. ”

Viewers have only been afforded few amounts of Tommy’s backstory in the series so far.

While his PTSD developed from his experiences as a tunneller in the war is one of the key themes of the series, the focus on the show is after he has returned to Small Heath.

However in season four, more was also revealed about his first love before he enlisted, Greta Jurossi.

This is revealed through his relationship with radical Jessie Eden (Charlie Murphy) who presses him on the subject.

However, this new audio story gives fans of show their clearest insight yet into the notorious character.

Peaky Blinders seasons 1-5 are now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

‘El Camino’: What to Remember 6 Years After ‘Breaking Bad’

Six years ago, AMC’s award-season juggernaut “Breaking Bad” came to a bloody and satisfying end, and with it the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), the high school science teacher who became an Albuquerque drug kingpin. AMC quickly spun off a prequel series, “Better Call Saul,” giving fans more time with characters like Saul Goodman, Mike Ehrmantraut and Gus Fring. But given that shift in focus — and all the carnage of the final “Breaking Bad” season — it was reasonable to think that the finale was the last word otherwise.

Then in late 2018, the series’s creator, Vince Gilligan, secretly gathered his collaborators in New Mexico and directed his own screenplay for “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” which comes to Netflix Friday. Judging by the trailer, the movie introduces a bunch of new characters and brings back a few familiar ones, the most important being Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), whom we last saw looking broken but alive, speeding off through the desert in … an El Camino.

But what about the rest? Remember Skinny Pete? And what about poor Flynn? It’s been a while, so here’s a refresher on where we left the characters who may still have some bearing on the sequel — alive, dead or somewhere in between.

Jesse Pinkman

In Season 5, Walter’s right-hand man, Jesse, went through the wringer. First he came to realize just how much Walter had betrayed him. Then he was made a literal slave to meth-dealing white supremacists. We don’t know a lot about what happened to Jesse after the desert shootout that killed the D.E.A. agent (and Walt’s brother-in-law) Hank Schrader (Dean Norris). But by the time Walter came to save him, his existence looked tortured: imprisoned in the meth lab, cooking for monsters, rarely seeing the light of day.

Walter saved him, relying on his usual mix of brazenness and ingenuity (and the help of a remote-controlled machine gun). Jesse sped off into the night, hysterical and screaming. The movie looks to pick up immediately thereafter, so remember the trauma inflicted by Jesse’s captivity. It will surely play a role.

Badger and Skinny Pete

The first teaser trailer for “El Camino” offered a glimpse of Jesse Pinkman’s regular collaborator Skinny Pete (Charles Baker). He appears again in the official trailer, alongside his usual partner, Badger (Matthew Lee Jones). They were two of the last people to do business with Walt. In the series finale, they were paid by Walter to pose as assassins outside of the home of Walter’s former business partners the Schwartzes (Jessica Hecht and Adam Godley), a ruse to ensure that the couple would do as they were told. Pete and Badger also revealed to Walter that blue meth was still on the scene. Jesse has turned to them in times of need before. Judging by the trailer, he looks to need their help again.

Saul Goodman

The last we saw Saul (Bob Odenkirk), he was headed to a new life — which “Better Call Saul” has since confirmed involved an illustrious career as a Cinnabon employee. Could he resurface somewhere on the timeline between his last “Breaking Bad” appearance and those ominous “Saul” flash-forwards? Certainly. And an appearance by Odenkirk could really tie all three “Breaking Bad”-related projects together.

Huell Babineaux

Saul’s lovable bodyguard, Huell (Lavell Crawford), has been the subject of much internet concern as he was last seen being told never to leave a safe house by Agents Schrader and Gomez — who were then killed by Nazis. Is he still there? If Saul comes back into the picture in “El Camino,” he could also bring back one of the few people he thinks he can still trust.

Andrea and Brock Cantillo

There’s a shot of a photo of Jesse’s former girlfriend, Andrea, and her son, Brock (Ian Posada and Emily Rios), in the “El Camino” trailer, reminding viewers how important they were to Jesse — and to the plot: The end of “Breaking Bad” would have been very different if not for Jesse’s realization that Walter had poisoned Brock. In the second-to-last episode, Jesse watched as Todd (Jesse Plemons) murdered Andrea on her porch; maybe Jesse will try to be a father to an orphaned Brock in “El Camino.”

And although most of the Nazis are dead and Jesse already strangled Todd to death in the finale, it stands to reason that some of Todd’s more distant associates are probably still alive. Will Jesse be seeking more revenge?

Old Joe

The owner of Rocker Salvage (Larry Hankin) was a part of Jesse’s schemes in Season 5. He supplied the giant magnet used to wipe clean Gus Fring’s laptop in police custody. And he helped Jesse and Walt build their and their mobile meth lab operation. He has been spotted in the trailer for “El Camino.”

Skyler White and Walter White Jr.

Skyler and Walter Jr., a.k.a. Flynn (Anna Gunn and R.J. Mitte), again moved with baby Holly out of the family home in which so much of “Breaking Bad” took place. But Walter still found them in the finale. In a phone call the episode before, Walt Jr. had angrily asked his father to hurry up and die, so it’s just as well he wasn’t home.

Almost unfazed by Walter’s appearance, Skyler listened to what Walt Sr. had to say, arguably got some closure, learned where Hank’s body was buried and then allowed him to say a final goodbye to his daughter. After leaving, Walter watched from afar as his son come home from school, unaware his father was seeing him for the final time.

Lydia Rodarte-Quayle

Left to reassemble the pieces of Gus Fring’s broken empire, Lydia (Laura Fraser) was a key part of how the series reached its conclusion. Her expanded role was short-lived. After Jesse killed Todd, she called Todd’s phone, expecting confirmation that Walter was dead. Instead Walter picked up: Turned out not only was he alive, he had also replaced the “stevia crap” she used in her tea with ricin the last time they met. Presumably she won’t be back.

Gretchen and Elliott Schwartz

Walter was just about to turn himself in when he saw Gretchen and Elliott on Charlie Rose, talking about how little the now-infamous drug kingpin had to do with their success. He tracked them down, dropping millions of dollars on them with instructions to form a trust fund for his family. Perhaps “El Camino” will provide an update on whether they actually go along with Walt’s plan.

Marie Schrader

In the series finale, Hank’s widow, Marie (Betsy Brandt), called her sister, Skyler, with news about Walt’s return. Will Marie figure into Jesse’s story? Probably not. But Gilligan has a sneaky way of bringing characters back, so we can’t rule it out, especially if Jesse re-enters Skyler’s life for some reason.

Walter White

Gilligan has confirmed it: Yes, Walter is dead. But the way Gilligan has played with time on both of his shows means we can probably expect a flashback or two on “El Camino.” Those could open the door to many characters who were dead when the series ended, including Jesse’s speedball-shooting ex, Jane (Krysten Ritter); Gus (Giancarlo Esposito); Gus’s right-hand, Mike (Jonathan Banks); and even Hank.

The big question, however, is whether Walter will be among those familiar faces. Would it truly feel like “Breaking Bad” if he weren’t?

Joan Collins talks being ‘resented’ by Dynasty co-stars ‘Never spoken about it before’

Dame Joan Collins has claimed there was “a lot of resentment” from some of the Dynasty cast, after she joined back in 1981. The actress portrayed Alexis Carrington, the vengeful ex-wife of oil tycoon Blake Carrington (played by John Forsythe) for eight years. However, the 86-year-old has revealed what it was really like behind-the-scenes in a new interview with Attitude Magazine. She admitted that she would normally play down the rumours but has opened up about what was really going on.

Even now, when we get together for Dynasty reunions, I see an antipathy towards me

Joan Collins

Speaking to The Awards issue of the publication, Dame Joan revealed what she think sparked the problems, after taking home the icon gong at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards 2019 last night.

When asked about the Dynasty cast’s resentment, she commented: “I’ve been asked this question a million times, and when I was doing it, I would poo-poo it.

“I’d say, ‘Oh, no, no’. But yes. There was. And now I know there was, because many people have come back to me who were around at that time and said, ‘They bl**dy hated you, Joan’.”

The star continued: “The fact that I was English, some didn’t like that. This English woman comes in and saves the show.

“This is what the media said, because the show was about to be cancelled… Even now, when we get together for Dynasty reunions as we did a few years ago, I see an antipathy towards me.”

She went on to mention some co-stars by name: “If you look at some of the things that John Forsythe, Gordon Thompson [Adam Carrington], and even Michael Nader [Dex] said about me in interviews, they were not nice.

“I have never said anything about it before, but now the time has come.”

Dame Joan turned heads for all the right reasons at yesterday’s star-studded ceremony at the capital’s Roundhouse in Camden.

Wearing her brunette tresses down in a voluminous ‘do, she opted for mostly black attire.

Her floor-sweeping look, complete with thigh-high slit, featured a clingy design at the top.

She wore it with an embellished jacket and a statement jewelled necklace as well as matching earrings.

Fellow guest Cheryl put on a boob-baring display in a daring braless look for the annual bash.

Meanwhile, it comes just months after Dame Joan was treated by medics for smoke inhalation after a fire at her flat.

She later took to Twitter to thank the ambulance crew who helped her and her husband in the aftermath of the incident.

The star called her spouse, 54, her “hero” as she revealed he had “doused” the fire with an extinguisher.

Strictly Come Dancing 2019: Will Bayley and Janette eliminated as Foxtrot curse strikes?

Strictly Come Dancing celebrity contestants are gearing up for the fourth live show and for one pair, it will be the end of their dancing journey. According to historic data, Will Bayley MBE is at risk of being eliminated.

The Olympic tennis table professional and his dance partner Janette Manrara scored a respectable 23 points for their Paso Doble.

Their dramatic routine feature Pikachu and Ash as a nod to Movie Week and the judges had mixed feedback about the performance.

“Oh, you attacked it like a demon!” Bruno Tonioli remarked. “Fire, passion, aggression which is all correct for the Paso Doble.

“But, you can do artistry as well; when you do your shaping, don’t mash it all the time. Sometimes you can link it and stretch it a bit more.”

Craig Revel Horwood said he too had “the same note” about “shaping through the arms and the shoulders”.

“But, it was full of strength, it had intent and purpose, well done,” he added.

Motsi Mabuse continued: “I loved the tension in your body, you really had a nice shape. I loved the build up in the middle and then you released the power.”

Head judge Shirley Ballas was last to comment saying: “It had a lot of power, it was also very staccato.

“I would have liked to see continuous body movement throughout the shapes you were making, and I agree with Bruno, you could also now go into a little but more artistry and flow. But a very good try.”

This weekend, Will and Janette are going to be performing the Foxtrot, but it seems this dance could be their last.

Express.co.uk looked back at the history of Strictly Come Dancing and the scores the Foxtrot received when danced on week four.

The Paso Doble was the most performed dance during week three of the show’s history, but the Foxtrot was joint second.

In the past 16 years, the Ballroom dance has not scored higher than 24 points.

Back in the very first series, former England rugby player Martin Offiah was partnered with Erin Boag and together they were awarded 24 points for their Foxtrot during week four of the competition.

Fast forward to 2009 and it was the turn of Joe Calzaghe and Kristina Rihanoff to perform the Foxtrot but they scored 20 points.

They were joint bottom of the leaderboard with Jo and Brendan, who also scored the same combined total for their Foxtrot routine.

Does this mean Will is going to suffer the same fate as those who has danced the Foxtrot before him in week four?

It comes after Will spoke out about his disability.

During a conversation with Closer magazine he spoke about the adaptations he has been allowed: “I had special shoes made, which give me extra balance, and they’ve made a big difference.

Will also shared that despite his limbs, Janette doesn’t hold back on the criticism.

“I thought she might be soft on me because of my difficulties, but she tells me straight, which is the best way. She’s adapted it really well for me,” he added.

Strictly Come Dancing returns tonight at 6.40pm on BBC One.

Stranger Things season 4: Could the new season be released in December?

Stranger Things season four is officially on the cards after Netflix released an exciting, Easter egg-filled trailer to mark its official renewal. The new clip has led to fans attempting to unpick everything that could have been revealed about the series so far. One major clue is about the potential release date of season four, which some have been theorising could be as early as December 2019.

Could Stranger Things season 4 be released in December?

Stranger Things season four has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the sci-fi series since the last outing ended on a massive cliffhanger.

Cutting away to a Russian laboratory in somewhere called Kamchatka in the credits, the final scene revealed that they were not only hoarding a Demogorgan but also had an American prisoner in their care.

However, Netflix waited a few months before announcing the series will officially be coming back for season four.

This was finally revealed last week with the release of a short teaser trailer hinting at what is to come.

READ MORE: Stranger Things season 4: Is Chief Jim Hopper alive?

The short clip showed the logo of the series in the Upside Down with the tagline “we’re not in Hawkins anymore.”

Although some viewers are convinced the teaser also contains a hint to the potential release date of season four.

This theory originated from the focus on the clock in the clip, and on the days before its release when the clock was broadcast across the Stranger Things social media accounts.

In the official clip accompanying the season four announcement, there is a clock attached to a tree, which seems to be stopped on the time 12:30.

READ MORE: Stranger Things: The real-life relationships away from the series

Some eagle-eyed viewers have been speculating over whether this could mean that the show would be released on December 30.

Reddit user Threedotsguy argued that this could even be in December 2019 if the creators had made the decision to shoot seasons three and four back-to-back.

They wrote: “Apparently, episodes of season four have already been shot together with season three episodes, in a long schedule, since it ensures that the kids don’t seem like they’ve aged very much.”

Another piece of evidence cited for this is that some of the major actors involved have changed their appearance since season three aired.

This includes Steve Harrington actor Joe Keery who has cut his famous hair shorter, as well as Hopper actor David Harbour who has shaved his moustache off.

However, other users on Reddit have been speculating that the series has only just begun filming, so would probably not return until next December at least.

Netflix has not officially revealed anything about the confirmed release date yet.

In the meantime, it looks sure that the creators will be keeping fans guessing, with their official writers’ room Twitter account teasing viewers about the return.

READ MORE: Stranger Things: Does new teaser prove Hopper is in the Upside Down?

Recently on October 7, they posted in reply to one fan’s tweet asking for the release date, “I don’t date but thanks for the offer.”

The series has also not followed a set pattern with its previous release dates on Netflix.

Season one was released in July 2016, season two in October 2017 and the season three not until July 2019.

Express.co.uk will update this article as soon as any more is revealed about the release date.

Stranger Things season 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.

The Apprentice 2019: Former star slams candidate for ‘killing’ show by ‘leaking’ result

BBC bosses are reportedly facing a dilemma after one of this year’s candidates revealed they had made it to the final of The Apprentice. The show is filmed earlier in the year but the result of the competition is kept under wraps in order not to ruin the series for viewers. However show bosses are now reportedly doing all they can to keep the individual’s identity hidden.

Now, 2018 candidate Sabrina Stocker has spoken out on the leak and explains the individual responsible could potentially “ruin” the show.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Sabrina was asked what about candidates leaking information about the series.

Sabrina remarked: “Yeah, I think it ruins the magic of the show if anything’s leaked.

“Obviously you know it is pre-filmed but if who is going out the next week or who makes the final five is leaked, then the viewers lose that magic.”

“I think it would completely kill the series,” she added.

The tennis events company owner went on to explain BBC bosses make sure candidates know how important is it to keep quiet.

Discussing the secrecy of the result, she said: “There’s like a lot of emphasis on making sure that we respect that.”

On last year’s show, Sabrina was in the final three the most times but made it through to the interview stage before being fired.

The 22-year-old was asked what it was like to battle it out in the boardroom so many times.

“It’s a bit of a lion’s den,” she said. “I was in the bottom three, you know, the most amount of times…”

She continued: “But it’s quite tricky, because after the bottom three, you’re going to go back to the house and live with the other person.

“So it’s a really strange, intense dynamic when you’re in [the boardroom].”

The young business woman went on to make a shocking admission about the boardroom scenes.

She revealed that she didn’t mind being in the final three too much as she had some surprising support.

“It was actually really nice because Karren and Claude were fighting my corner a lot of the time,” she said.

Elsewhere, Karren Brady has spoken out on replacing Lord Sugar if he steps down from the show in the future.

“What makes the show great is the show is a business format, the three of us are there not because we’re TV personalities and we would never consider ourselves to be TV personalities.

The Big Bang Theory: Series theme song has ONE glaring mistake – but what is it?

“Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,” is the opening line every Big Bang Theory fan has heard hundreds of times over the years. Every episode of the CBS sitcom has opened with the same song from the Barenaked Ladies and the beat has become a catchy tune synonymous with the show. However, some fans may not be aware of a factual inaccuracy hidden in the lyrics.

While The Big Bang Theory doesn’t use the entire song by Barenaked Ladies, every episode begins with the first verse.

For those who aren’t aware of the actual lyrics, the Big Bang theme song is as follows:

“Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state,

Then nearly 14 billion years ago expansion started, wait,

The earth began to cool, The autotrophs began to drool,

Neanderthals developed tools, we built a wall (we built the pyramids),

Math, science, history, unravelling the mysteries,

That all started with the big bang! Hey!”

The song pays reference to the Big Bang, autotrophs and Neanderthals, all major players in the history of science.

However, the inaccuracy within the songs lies with the autotrophs.

In the theme song, it states “autotrophs began to drool.”

Science buffs will be aware, however, that this isn’t actually possible.

According to National Geographic, an autotroph is “an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals.

“Because autotrophs produce their own food, they are sometimes called producers.”

Autotrophs predominantly use photosynthesis in order to make food, a process which involves consuming energy from sunlight.

As such, the most familiar kinds of autotroph are plants or algae.

Therefore, they clearly couldn’t “drool” in the same sense as a human being.

The use of the phrase in The Big Bang Theory hasn’t gone unnoticed by some fans, sparking an online debate.

On The Naked Scientists forum page, many think the line was sung simply because it rhymed.

One fan said: “The ‘drool’ comes because it rhymes with ‘cool’ and ‘tool’ on adjacent lines, but I guess it is saying that the autotrophs lived, consumed raw materials and grew.

A second added: “Coz (sic) it rhymes with ’cool’. There is a longer version of the song which rhymes ‘Australopithecus’ and ‘sick of us’.”

Whatever the reason behind the lyrics, it didn’t stop the theme tune becoming one of the most popular on modern TV.

The Big Bang theory is available to stream on Netflix now.
