The Emmerdale villagers may be hoping for a quiet Christmas but soap fans know that is never the case. From family arrivals, menopause struggles and Paddy Kirk (played by Dominic Brunt) preparing for his first Christmas alone, it’s set to be a busy and dramatic festive period.
A new Dingle arrives in the village
On Christmas Day, Cain (Jeff Hordley) has a visitor in prison and he comes face to face with his brother Caleb.
After staring intensely at each other for some time, Caleb finally speaks to Cain.
He expresses his surprise at learning Faith (Sally Dexter) had just died after being told she was dead 30 years ago.
Caleb demands to know why Cain lied to him and took away his chance to get to know his family.
Elsewhere in the village, Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) drops off presents as well as a gift for Belle’s (Eden Taylor Draper) birthday.
Chas is left feeling sad and alone when Belle and Mandy (Lisa Riley) are cold towards her.
Wanting to be alone, she heads to the Woolpack thinking it will be empty but is stunned to find Paddy there with Eve and Marlon’s (Mark Charnock) family celebrating Christmas.
Paddy agrees to a ceasefire with Chas for their daughter and Marlon thanks everyone for helping with his recovery.
Eventually, the awkward atmosphere becomes too much for Chas and she heads off to visit her daugher’s grave.
While she sets off her mother’s firework, she is approached by a stranger who drops a bombshell.
The next day in prison Cain prepares to see Moira while a flashback to 1991 reveals what happened between Caleb and Cain.
Paddy struggles with his mental health
Stress levels are rising for Paddy as he tries to stay on top of his work but he accidentally gives Vinny’s (Bradley Johnson) dog an overdose of sedative.
He sits in his car as he begins crying, as he realises he is struggling with the fall out of Chas’s betrayal.
Bernice Blackstock struggles with her menopause
On Christmas Day, Liam Cavanagh (Johnny McPherson) starts his first visit of the day at the Dingles.
He tries to turn down a plate of food but has no luck and stuffed from the Dingles’ feast, he heads to Holdgate for his second stop.
As he makes his way to the final stop at Bernice’s, she tells Liam they have saved plenty of food for him.
As Bernice takes a towel off the stack of food, Liam knows he has to do something to avoid eating more.
Meanwhile, as the party is in full swing, Leyla (Roxy Shahidi) slips away to have a Christmas meal for one.
As Leyla struggles with being alone, Liam and Bernice share a charged moment which ends with a kiss.
Bernice later becomes annoyed with her sister Nicola (Nichola Wheeler) interfering in her life and feels as though her family are mocking her menopause symptoms.
She wallows in self-pity before agreeing to get some help.
But Bernice isn’t impressed with the help on offer and thinks the conversation around menopause needs a make over.
Emmerdale airs weekdays on ITV at 7.30pm
