Back to the Future ending: Fans LOVE this Marty McFly surprise spot from original film

Back to the Future is 35 years old this week and fans still love dissecting its plot to this day. And now a stunning new theory is getting a lot of attention on the fan theories Reddit page. User TheManWhoMight argues on the film’s ending that: “The Marty that Marty saw go back in time wasn’t the same Marty as him.”

The theorist wrote: “I don’t know if this has been said before but I’ll say it anyway.

“Towards the ending of Back To The Future, we see Marty chasing after the Libyans, making it to the parking lot, witnessing Emmett get shot and seeing himself go back in time.

“Thing is, that wasn’t exactly ‘himself’.

“Marty 1, which is the Marty we see throughout the film, goes back in time and alters not only the way his parents met but also how he and his siblings were raised.”

They added: “This ‘new’ Marty, or Marty 2 grows up in the newly altered timeline that, luckily, isn’t altered enough to prevent him from meeting Emmett and thus, allowing him to go back in time.

“So Marty 2 goes back in time on the same night Marty 1 did and winds up being witnessed by Marty 1 that same night.”

In the comments, another fan questioned if a new timeline would always be created.

Reddit user SpideyFan914 wrote: “So what happens to Marty 2 anyway? He gonna alter the timeline even further and wind up a whole new timeline 3?”

They continued: “If Back to the Future works under the presumed ‘replacement’ model (i.e. the timeline Marty 1 created replaces his original timeline, so there no longer exists a reality where Calvin didn’t appear in 1955) then Marty 2’s time travel alterations should also replace timeline 2 that Marty 1 has arrived in.

“Or else, if Marty 2 doesn’t alter the timeline enough to branch a new one, then he should arrive again at some point, creating two Martys.

“Therefore, Back to the Future does not actually have a replacement model.

“Which means the original timeline where George works for Biff and Doc is killed by the Libyans still exists, and Marty 1 spontaneously disappeared from that timeline causing George 1 and Lorraine 1 to spiral into grief at the apparent death of their son.”

They added: “Or the replacement works on a biological level as well (evidenced by Marty disappearing in 1955) and his memories will gradually be replaced by those from the new timeline, meaning he will eventually forget that his father used to work for Biff and will morph into Marty 2.

“Yeah, Back to the Future doesn’t exactly have a paradox-free time travel model…”

During the lockdown, the original cast took part in a virtual reunion on Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart YouTube series.

Back to the Future co-creators Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis also took part and reaffirmed that a fourth film would never happen.

Gad asked where a hypothetical Back to the Future Part IV would take Doc and Marty.

Gale joked: “Well it would have to be that Doc and Marty find out that we’re thinking about making another Back to the Future movie and they come back to the stop us from doing such a crazy thing.”

While Zemeckis said: “If I had an idea which I could have pitched to Bob with a straight face, we would have made it.

“I have no answer to that question.”
