BGT fans confused over Simon Cowells homegrown comment as US pro gets golden buzzer

Britain's Got Talent fans were left confused on Sunday's episode over Simon Cowell's "homegrown" talent comment after the ITV show's golden buzzer was used to send through a US pro to the semi-finals.

The hit ITV talent competition returned to ITV over the weekend to celebrate the long Easter weekend and after Brit Kidz performed a routine inspired by different BGT acts, Simon gushed about the group being "homegrown" talent.

Simon, 62, could be heard saying to his fellow judges, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, David Walliams: "I have to say, about this show, the acts feel homegrown. It's like they've done something specifically for this and I like that."

The comment left fans of the show confused as it came just a day after Amanda had used her golden buzzer to send Loren Allred, a singer from The Greatest Showman and from Brooklyn, New York, through to the semi-finals.

One fan took to Twitter and wrote: "Simon – 'I love that the acts are all home grown' #BGT American professional singer gets golden buzzer."

As another agreed: “Simon: ‘I like they are home grown and they did something specific for the show.’ Literally 24 hours ago they put through an American professional singer."

A third penned: “Huh, Simon says he likes home grown talent but yesterday put through an American with a successful career and plenty of exposure already?! #BGT” as another asked: “Simon, who was the golden buzzer act last night??? #BGT.”

Loren stunned the judges and the audiences with a beautiful performance of Never Enough which she also sang in the hit film, The Greatest Showman.

While the audience gave Loren a standing ovation, many fans questioned whether the professional singer should have been given a golden buzzer as she is already a successful, famous singer.

However, ITV bosses have defended Amanda’s decision to propel Loren into the semi-final.

A spokesperson told the Metro: “Whilst most people will have heard the infamous Greatest Showman track, Loren is not a household name, and she deserves her spot on the BGT stage.

“We hope that such articles will not count against somebody who is well-deserving of this opportunity. It’s fantastic that Loren is now able to step out and stand in her own right to be the face, and not just the voice, of one of the most well-known tracks of all time."

ITV viewers were equally frustrated to learn that Simon’s golden buzzer act, comedian Axel Blake, also has his own Amazon Prime TV show.

The comedian performed a stand-up show at the O2 Arena that was recorded for the streaming platform a few years ago.
