Mike Parry furiously condemned the UK’s move to drop Portugal from its green travel list in a fiery rant on the Jeremy Vine Show. He accused the scientists of “moving the goalposts” and claimed that Boris Johnson had “panicked and caved”. The move from green to amber status means that Britons should not travel to Portugal and those who do will have to self-isolate at home for 10 days if they return after the new rules come into effect.

Mr Parry erupted on the Channel 5 programme, saying that Britons just had their “reward” for following the lockdown rules taken away by the Government.

The panellist said: “The thought was we are now getting a reward for the fantastic vaccination programme, for all the privations we have had to suffer over the 14 months.

“For all the putting on masks, social distancing, the reward is you can go on holiday to Portugal.

“Portugal is one of the safest countries in the world because their infection rate are now lower than ours.”

He continued: “And do you know what the Government has done?

“They have based this on the figure of the country of Portugal, where most of the new problems in Portugal are in Lisbon.

“Who goes on holiday to Lisbon? Nobody. We all go to the Algarve, to the beaches.

“We go to great open spaces. Lots of sunshine and sea, and there is no problem there whatsoever.

“The Government has panicked once again because the scientists have had their way, moving the goalposts, frightening us all with figures.

Travel list: Govt 'making it up as they go' says Ryanair CEO

“They have adopted the policy that means we have to get down to zero infections before we can release people back into the free world we used to enjoy.

“The Government are culpable of panicking and caving into the scientific argument when the economic argument and those people who are now suffering huge problems in health need more help from this Government.”

The furious rant comes amid a growing backlash against the travel decision.

Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary accused the Government of “making it up as they go along”.

He told the BBC the decision to move Portugal from green to amber “isn’t based on any science or public health”.

Mr O’Leary urged the Government to “stop messing with people’s lives”.

The Portuguese government has also hit out, describing the UK’s decision as “unfathomable”.

Similar to Mr Parry’s argument, Elidérico Viegas, the president of the Algarve Hotel and Tourism Business Association, said the Algarve was paying the price for a rise in cases in Lisbon.

He said: “It’s not good news. It’s unfair because the Algarve is being caught in the middle of all this because case numbers in the region are lower than the minimum considered safe.”
