Cain drops a bombshell on Moira in Emmerdale after killer Kyle strikes

There was perhaps a case of like father, like son in tonight’s Emmerdale as young Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn) responded to Carl Holliday (Charlie Munro Joyce)’s taunts by shoving him into a table in the Hide.

But if we’re being fair it was also a case of like stepmother like son for Carl, as he started the argument by asking Kyle what it was like in prison – ‘Did you have to eat maggots and poo in a bucket?’ It was his next words that really riled Kyle and which had come straight from the mouth of Nicola (Nicola Wheeler):

‘Mum says she’s glad you’re not her son. Who wants to live with Killer Kyle?’

And Nicola was on hand to fan the flames after the incident, branding Kyle as being ‘obviously a menace to society’ and threatening to call the police.

Terrified of what the police’s involvement would mean for Kyle, Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson) and Cain (Jeff Hordley) joined forces to plead with Nicola to reconsider. Nicola was quite clear who was to blame for Kyle’s outburst. ‘No wonder Kyle is like he is,’ she told an angry Cain.

It was Amy who managed to persuade Nicola to step back a bit, explaining that Kyle had genuinely been scared that Al (Michael Wildman)was going to kill his dad when he pulled the trigger. She said that the boy needed ‘time and patience’ to get over what had happened.

This confrontation was weighing heavily on Cain’s mind when he got home later, and he told Moira (Natalie J. Robb) that he knew he’d let his son down.

‘Something switched in him the day he pulled that trigger,’ he reflected. ‘There’s no going back from that.’

Believing, as Nicola had stated, that he’s a bad influence on Kyle, Cain announced that he wouldn’t be fighting Amy for custody of the boy, who would be better off with his mum. Moira, who’s brought Kyle up for much of his life, was distraught, wondering what that would mean for Kyle’s brother Isaac (Bobby Dunsmoir) and for their family, as well as Kyle.

But Cain has apparently made his mind up. After going through so much to protect Kyle, is he really ready to turn his back on his son for Kyle’s sake?

While Cain (and Nicola) may have a point about him being a toxic influence there’s also Moira’s side of the argument which was also echoed by Caleb (William Ash) when he was talking to Amy earlier in the episode. Speaking of Kyle’s time in custody he said, ‘When he closed his eyes and pretended to be somewhere else where do you think that was?’

And we know it was Butlers Farm. Will Cain regret his decision?

Emmerdale continues Tuesday March 7 at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
