Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has said that Cop26 is “going to be a success” despite Xi Jingpin’s reported absence at the climate summit. The UK is set to host the UN-led 26th summit United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, or COP26 in Glasgow between 31 October to 12 November. LBC host Nick Ferrari hit out at the Transport Secretary for the Government’s inability to ensure China, considering one of the greatest contributors to global polluting, would attend the meeting.

“She says that those who talk but don’t do are so irritating.”

Mr Shapps replied: “I don’t want to be dragged into Queen’s private comments over her, but what I would say is the Cop 26 is enormously important, taking place next month.

“It will bring together under British leadership vast parts of the global economy.”

He continued: “And we know that very many leaders are coming from America to Europe and beyond.

It’s important that it’s a success.”

Mr Shapps said: “Well, even China who people often cite as being a laggard have made a number of moves, including a date to zero carbon.

“Their economy, I think, certainly is stopping investment or paying for coal stations overseas

“Of course, we want them to go further, we need to go further.

Let’s see who comes. Let’s wait and see the outcome of COP before we prejudge.

“But I’m sure. I’m sure it will be successful, as long as we all approach it in the right spirit.”

It is understood that Xi Jinping will not be attending Cop26, the climate summit in Glasgow in October.

The world leaders from about 200 countries will meet to negotiate key climate deals in global efforts to prevent global environmental disasters.

“We only know about people who are not coming. It’s really irritating when they talk but they don’t do.”
