Doctor Who fans stunned as David Tennant reprises iconic role but fans are confused

David Tennant has reprised his role as the doctor on Doctor Who after Jodie Whittaker made her exit on last night's finale.

In the final scenes of the 90 minute episode, Jodie – who made history as the first ever female doctor – took in one last sunrise before regenerating and, in a huge twist, turned back into David Tennant's Doctor, leaving fans gobsmacked.

"I AM SCREAMING!!!! DAVID TENNANT IS BACK!" wrote one.

While another added: "OMG THE DOCTOR ACTUALLY REGENERATED INTO DAVID TENNANT. HE’S BACK AS THE DOCTOR, I HAVE CHILLS."

"#DoctorWho OMG Holy Crap! David Tennant is BACK. I am SO! SO! HAPPY," wrote a third.

And a fourth user said: "After 9 years David Tennant is back on Doctor Who on my screen as the Doctor!!!!!!"

David played the role from 2005 to 2010, while also reprising the role three years later in 2013.

Last night's 90 minute special saw Jodie's version of the doctor facing multiple threats from Cybermen, Daleks and Master before she said goodbye to her fellow mates after realising that her end was near.

But it seems fans were left upset by her exit, with many left unhappy with the way she was written out.

One person said: "I’M SO CONFUSED!”

While another added: "Watched Jodie's last episode of Doctor Who and it was the most complicated tv episode i have ever watched and it was also just kinda boring."

A third added: "As a standard series finale, this would have been good. A finale to the Chibnall era? Frustrating. Fugitive Doctor wasted on a hologram cameo. No resolution at all to the Timeless Child arc. I’m relieved it’s over. Jodie deserved better writing.”

While another added that they were sad to see the end of Jodie's version of the Doctor. They wrote: "Mixed feelings on what she was given to work with during her run but Jodie Whittaker was a wonderful Doctor. Enjoyed a lot of her last episode, disappointed by the one bit you’d expect. Excited to see where they take the show next.”

A second wrote: "I'm shaking. I got high off of that. Literally, actually, high. The maddest, most full-fat, high-sucrose, acid-trip version of #DoctorWho ever. Perfectly bonkers. I completely lost it several times."

A third added: "A wise person once said to me goodbye is only hurt because what came before was so special beautiful."

And another said: "I'm not ready to say goodbye to Jodie."

Other actors who appeared on Sunday 23 October night's episode included Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann.

Actress Jo Martin also returned in the scenes as a future incarnation of the doctor.
