EastEnders star Bobby Brazier says mum Jade Goody would be proud of new role
EastEnders star Bobby Brazier has said his mum Jade Goody would be proud of his new role, after he filmed his first scenes as Freddie Slater.
The 19-year-old is taking on his first acting role, with his first episodes on the cobbles airing this week.
Goody died in 2009 at the age of 27 after a battle with cervical cancer.
Asked what she would think, Bobby responded: ‘She’d be proud. Why wouldn’t she be? Anyone who loves and cares about me, all my friends and family, they’re all proud and all supportive, so I’m sure – well I know – she’d be the same.’
He added of the new role: ‘This is completely different to anything I’ve done before. I’ve never acted before. I’ve been thrown in the deep end a bit but I’d like to say I’m swimming.
‘There were nerves but everyone made me so comfortable straight away literally from the first scene.’
Freddie first appeared in the market, haggling at Billy (Perry Fenwick)’s stall before helping himself to a bap from Stacey (Lacey Turner)’s stall without paying, immediately setting the tone for his character as someone with charm to spare but not one to follow the rules.
Executive Producer Chris Clenshaw has said of the character, ‘Freddie Slater is a chaotic 18-year-old with a sensitive soul. A modern-day lad who’s in touch with his spiritual side. He’s philosophical, accepting, but full of mischief and makes mistakes.
‘He kind of lives in the moment. He doesn’t see too far down the road so he doesn’t think about the consequences of his actions so therefore he gets himself into a lot of trouble quite often.’
Discussing the process of picking Bobby for the role, Chris said: ‘We were doing are usual casting process and we’re always looking for new talent and I saw Bobby’s social media and we were already conceiving Freddie and building his character and there was some of what I saw in Bobby that I thought would be perfect for Freddie.
‘His energy. His twinkle. His spiritual side. So then we brought Bobby in to audition along with some others and he just blew us away with his performance. He is Freddie Slater.’
Before she died, Goody welcomed sons Bobby and Freddie with Jeff Brazier.
She went on to marry Jack Tweed, who also told Metro.co.uk how proud she would be of her sons.
