Emmerdales 50th anniversary plans: when it airs and what viewers can expect

Emmerdale is scheduled to celebrate its 50th anniversary this autumn and there's some huge storylines planned for the memorable episodes.

There's already been a few hints dropped while some plot twists have been confirmed by bosses at the hit ITV soap, which first landed on screens back in 1972.

Three iconic characters, Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), Diane Sudgen (Elizabeth Estensen) and Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh), will all be making a return to the show, just in time for a "massive storm" which will wreck havoc on the village.

It's also thought that at least one death could occur, as it has been confirmed that several characters will be left fighting for their lives in a series of harrowing scenes involving the soap's “most epic” stunts to date.

Here's everything we know so far about Emmerdale's 50th anniversary episodes…

The Yorkshire-based soap will celebrate its big anniversary throughout the entire month of October, showcasing a series of episodes that will focus on the programme’s most beloved and iconic characters.

It's been confirmed that the village will “never be the same again” after a massive storm takes place within the anniversary month, leaving multiple characters hugely impacted by the event.

Series producer Kate Brooks said: “The big 50th week will focus on a massive storm that is going to rip through the village and absolutely leave a massive trail of destruction in its wake.

“Some of our best loved villagers will be in peril. And it's safe to say that literally the village won't be the same after this, and it will never be the same again, because the impact this storm has on people's lives. It’s just massive.

“In terms of filming, it's quite unprecedented in terms of what we're doing and the scale of what we're doing. And it's very exciting/nerve wracking to be part of that.”

According to the Mirror, show bosses have also confirmed that some characters will sustain serious injuries in the episodes, leaving some fighting for their lives.

It hasn't been revealed which exact characters will be in danger, but some names said to be involved in the devastating events include Faith Dingle, Amelia Spencer, Nate Robinson, Harriet Finch, Kim Tate, Belle and Sam Dingle.

Faith, portrayed by actress Sally Dexter, will take centre stage during the anniversary episodes it was recently revealed, after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year.

Bosses have hinted that Faith's tragic story will come to an end, with producer Jane Hudson saying: "As we start our brilliant month we will be focusing on our Faith storyline.

"Faith's story, which is such an emotional, heartbreaking story, is going to be huge across our 50th, and I think everybody involved in that story is pulling out some of the most spectacular performances I've seen in soap for a long time."

One character whose involvement in the Emmerdale anniversary extravaganza has been questioned is Marcus Dean, played by Darcy Grey.

Darcy recently let slip that his character might be hiding something and that he could turn out to be "more evil" than expected.

"I think everyone's expecting Marcus to be maybe a little bit more evil than they expected but time will tell about how that will unfold," the actor told the Mirror.

Amelia Spencer (Daisy Campbell) is set to find herself in danger in October as the highly anticipated storm hits the village.

Many fans have speculated that pregnant teen Amelia will give birth during the episodes, but this is yet to be confirmed.

However, producer Jane heavily hinted that Amelia's due date is approaching, saying: "Amelia is due soon, and whether or not she has the baby in the 50th celebrations I'm obviously not going to tell you. But Amelia does play a very big part in the storm and when she needs to be found, because she's stuck on her own, she does play a very big part.

"You'll just have to wait and see that and then going forward, we have just the brilliantness of the Dingles against the Spencers against everybody, and there are some fantastic proper family rows that are gonna take place between these. There are some brilliant scenes coming up so yeah, that story has got a lot of legs."

Viewers will also see Kim Tate (Claire King) and Will Taylor (Dean Andrews) tie the knot during the 50th anniversary episodes, but like any soap wedding, it won't necessarily go to plan.

Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) will attempt to stop Will going through with the marriage, which may potentially lead to a showdown between Kim and Harriet.

Actress Katherine has hinted that her character is "playing with fire" as she looks to win back Will in the episodes, much to Kim's annoyance.

Producer Jane has also teased that one character could be facing life in prison following the life-changing events in October.

According to the Mirror, she teased: "When we get to the end of October, it might be the end of our celebrations, but we will be ending that month with a storyline which kicks off a whole new story and potentially sees one of our characters looking at spending the rest They're life in jail.

"And I'm not going to tell you anything else about that story. Don't ask me because I will not tell you. But we are absolutely making sure that when our celebration month ends, it really is just the beginning of a whole new chapter particularly for one of our families."
