Selena: The Series has returned to Netflix to tell the final part of the singing star’s unforgettable story. The biographical drama recalls the events of Selena Quintanilla’s life as a renowned Tejano musician. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about how old the star was when she died.

How old was Selena Quintanilla when she died?

Netflix released the first half of Selena: The Series in December 2020 and fans were given insight into the star’s rise to fame.

Throughout her life she was forced to make countless tough choices, often having to choose between her family and her career.

Christian Serratos plays the singer in her adult years, while Madison Taylor Baez was cast as Young Selena.

Part two, which is also made up of nine episodes, explores the singer’s tragic death in further detail.

She was shot by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar (played by Natasha Perez), in March 1995.

Selena was just 23 years old when she died. Her death came 16 days before her 24th birthday.

Actress Serratos, who plays the Tejano singer in the series about her life, spoke to Variety about shooting her death scene.

She said: “This isn’t the story of a tragedy; it’s the story of a wonderful, beautiful woman and I think watching it, knowing what happens, you’re already hit with emotion so it doesn’t need to be gratuitous.”

The star said it was important to only show what was necessary, as she wanted to be respectful to the singer’s family.

Serratos said the singer’s death “hit her like a ton of bricks”.

Seidy López plays Selena’s mother, Marcella Quintanilla, in the series and she spoke about what they would tell Selena if she were alive today.

She said: “I would want to make sure that she knows that we did it with love and that we honor her and that we value the story.”

Selena’s friend and former manager, Saldívar, had been in charge of Selena Etc. boutiques.

Saldívar was surrounded by police and was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison with possible parole after 30 years.

Texas Governor George W Bush, who would become the US president, later declared Selena’s birthday Selena Day in Texas.

Saldívar, who was a registered nurse, had asked the Quintanilla family if she could start a fan club in San Antonio.

The idea was approved as it was believed the fan club would help her band grow in popularity.

Saldívar became close to Selena and the rest of the family, becoming acting president of the fan club in 1991.

Following the shooting Selena was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital, where she died.

Around 3,000 fans gathered for a vigil to celebrate her life.

A trailer for the second part of the Netflix series shows Selena performing in front of her fans.

In a video interview, she is asked: “When you are gone, how do you want to be remembered?” But she does not give an answer.

In part two, she makes the jump to go solo and take more control over her music.

At the end of the trailer, floral tributes are shown and a voice is once again heard asking her how she wants to be remembered.

She finally says: “Somebody who wanted to be a role model – the best daughter, the best sister, the best friend, the best wife. I just want to be remembered as somebody who gave it her all.”
