Is Baby Yoda from 'The Mandalorian' Actually Master Yoda?

Since The Mandalorian premiered on Disney+, this character stole the show and audience members’ hearts. Nicknamed Baby Yoda by fans on the internet, The Child is a main character in this Star Wars series. Is he the same lovable green creature from movies like The Last Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back? Here’s what we know about this character.

This article contains minor spoilers from the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian!

Disney+ premiered its original series, ‘The Mandalorian,’ at its launch date

One is the Jedi master behind characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker, the other is a force-sensitive child wanted by members of the former-Empire. Fans first met “Baby Yoda” during the first episode of the Disney+ original series, The Mandalorian.

Since then, he’s gone on a few adventures with the protagonist of this series, stopping at a New Republic prison, a krill farm, and even Tatooine. However, some fans are wondering if this is the same character from Star Wars movies like The Empire Strikes Back, Revenge of the Sith, and The Last Jedi.

Are Master Yoda and Baby Yoda from ‘The Mandalorian’ the same person?

The life-span of this species may be different than others, especially because a member of the Guild told the Mandalorian this “child” is 50-years-old. Could that mean that Baby Yoda is actually Master Yoda? Given this child’s size and speaking abilities, or lack thereof, most fans don’t think so.

This television series takes place after the fall of the Empire, but before the emergence of the First Order. That means this character is presumably not the same as Master Yoda, who became a ghost during Return of the Jedi. However, the Child could potentially be related to Master Yoda, because he can use the force.

Even after six “chapters” in this story, not much is known about the background of this adorable child. Although Director Jon Favreau reassured fans that more would be clear as the season progresses.

Why is the Child from ‘The Mandalorian’ the same species as Master Yoda?

Not much is known about Yoda and where he comes from. Although The Mandalorian takes place after the fall of the Empire, it offers more insight into these Star Wars creatures. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, writer and director Jon Favreau discussed his choice to feature Yoda’s species.

“We’ll learn more about him over the course of the season,” Jon Favreau said. “I think what’s great about what George created is that Yoda proper, the character that we grew up watching, was always shrouded in mystery, and that was what made him so archetypal and so mythic. We know who he is based on his behavior and what he stands for, but we don’t know a lot of details about where he comes from or his species. I think that’s why people are so curious about this little one of the same species.”
