Is Duffy leaving Casualty appearing on the soap for over 30 years?
Sister Lisa ‘Duffy’ Duffin (Cathy Shipton) was among the original cast of Casualty when it debuted over 30 years ago in 1986.
After all that time with the soap, Duffy was diagnosed with early-onset dementia in tragic scenes earlier this year.
With her symptoms only able to get progressively worse, is Duffy long for Casualty?
Is Duffy leaving Casualty?
Sadly Duffy is indeed going to leave her job as a nurse on Casualty.
In coming scenes, Duffy’s skills as a nurse will be put to the test when the bus that’s taking her to work knocks over a young woman.
At first she’s reluctant to get involved, but she can’t refuse calls to help.
Duffy manages to get the woman, Carrie, to the hospital, and even though Ciaran isn’t pleased to her involved, she becomes determined to keep working with the patient.
But the troubled Carrie turns out to have complicated needs, and the case proves challenging for our Duffy.
Will she be able to rise to the challenge and leave the ED with her head held high, or will it prove to be too much for her?
Producer Simon Harper has said of this emotional dementia storyline: ‘Casualty has a great tradition of state of the nation stories where we depict powerful health, social and emotional issues that many of the audience may well identify with.
‘To that end, we’re mindful of telling them authentically and sensitively, which is why we are always so grateful to fantastic charities like Dementia UK who do incredible work and give us invaluable advice.’
He also praised Cathy’s performance, saying: ‘Depicting this cruel disease hopefully will help raise awareness, and Cathy is knocking it out of the park with her heartbreaking performance.
‘She feels incredibly passionate about the story and feels a great sense of responsibility in telling it – we’re all massively proud of her.’
