Is Kevin Harts True Story series based on his life?

Kevin Hart is best known as a stand-up comedian and actor, starring in comedy movies such as Jumanji, Central Intelligence and Night School. The 42-year-old funnyman has been eager to work on darker projects, his latest being True Story on Netflix. The newly-released crime thriller is going to be one to watch as fans see a different side to Hart.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from True Story.

True Story follows the successful life of comedy icon The Kid (played by Hart) who ventures back to his hometown of Philadelphia.

He returns for a special stand-up act after his new superhero movie made more than a billion dollars.

This is when things turn sour for the comedian as he is reunited with his oldest brother Carlton (Wesley Snipes).

The Kid knows his brother’s appearance usually spells trouble but little did he know how much he was going to change his life.

After his brother’s arrival, The Kid enjoys a wild night of drinking with Carlton and his friends.

But when they wake up the next morning, the comedian finds himself next to the body of a dead woman.

Together, they must find a way to get rid of the body but thanks to Carlton and The Kid’s fame, it’s not going to be easy.

All seven episodes came out on Wednesday, November 24, on Netflix for subscribers to binge-watch.

Is Kevin Hart’s True Story series based on his life?

Given the crime thriller’s title, it isn’t hard to see why fans would think that True Story is based on Hart’s real life.

As he is also portraying someone in the limelight, many have thought Hart is simply portraying himself in the series.

However, this isn’t the case as the series has been largely fictionalised.

Therefore, no, Netflix’s True Story is not based on the comedian’s life.

True Story doesn’t come from the mind of Hart’s, nor is it based on a book or anyone else’s real-life experiences.

The thriller was written by Eric Newman who came up with its premise.

So while some fans would find it entertaining for there to be some truth in the plot, it appears there isn’t any.

But according to the New York Times, Hart’s life hasn’t been completely without drama.

Talking about Hart, the article reads: “’True Story’ is largely fictionalised, but Hart’s real-life has not lacked for drama.

“He is only two years removed from a car accident in which he sustained major back injuries, requiring surgery and rehabilitation, and which he has said left him a changed man.”

So perhaps it was this drama that inspired Hart to pursue his career in the thriller genre.

True Story is available to watch on Netflix.
